Does anyone know of any place that sells Antone's Po' Boys from
Antone's in Houston?

Thanks

I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but ironically I noticed that the
"Tiger Mart" attached to the Exxon station I stopped at this morning had
several neon signs proclaiming Antone's Po Boys for sale. Are these
something I should check out? The Exxon in question is at the corner of
William D. Tate and Mustang in Grapevine.

If it is indeed "The" Antone's from Houston ("Antone's Import Co." is
the exact title, I think), then by all means get one! I think they're
great. Actually a pretty simple sandwich, but they make their own
bread, and they just have some secret magically delicious taste.
Addictive. The ones in Houston at the Antones deli place come wrapped
in wax paper with their logo (a head of garlic, if I remember).

I'll have to swing by there some time, even tho it's not real
convenient. It's closer than Houston!

Check 'em out...and thanks for the hot tip.

You are in luck! There is an Antone's right here in Dallas on Harry
Hines near downtown Dallas. They sell the standard po'boys, as well
as other types of sandwiches all on the same good bread. In addition
they sell imported grocery items. It is about a mile NW of Downtown
(i.e., between downtown and Parkland); it's a block or two before
Wycliff/Harry Hines if coming from Downtown. It's a Medical Center
favorite.
The address is 4234 Harry Hines.

Good luck, and enjoy!

The place on Harry Hines is Antoine's--note the spelling--probably a
takeoff on the famous eatery in New Orleans. The Po'boys are good, but
not great. I have seen the Antone's po'boys in either Albertson's or Tom
Thumb in Carrollton--can't remember which. I lived in New Orleans for
eight years and frankly, I have not seen really authentic N.O. food
anywhere in the DFW area--either creole stuff like crawfish etouffee or
grocery store stuff like po'boys or Muffalettas. The cajun turkey place
at beltline and the tollway was the real deal, but it seems now to be
closed. It may be time for a weekend trip to New Orleans.

Happy eating,
Bruce

Sorry, guy, to have to correct you. I stand by the spelling, It is
indeed called Antone's. There is no "i" in it. And it is not related
to anything in New Orleans; this has a Middle Eastern or Greek "bent"
to it. I have been going there from the Medical Center for 15 years.
And just to confirm that I was right, I just checked in the Dallas
phonebook to see the spelling. So it is indeed Antone's at 4234 Harry
Hines. I didn't think I had misread if for so many long years. But I
have no idea of whether it is related to the *Houston's* Antone's.
However the spelling is the same. And they have the same principle
for po'boys...no lettuce/tomato to disguise the taste of the meat.
Perhaps it's run by some "cousins".

As one that has been going there since the early 70s, I would have bet
against you; and I would have been wrong. In the early 70s, it was the
hangout of the computer crowd when we pretty well knew all the players
by sight if not by name. From 11:30 to 1:30 cars parked on the street in
the neighborhood driveways and business parking lots to run in for a
sandwich. The neighbors complained so much they had to hire cops. Most
notable then was their annual escargot eating contest.

On a different note, I tried the Tiger Mart in Grapevine tho I am
basically opposed to food and petro in the same location. The label is
Antone's of Houston. The Tiger includes chips and the largest drink I've
ever seen; in the case of a 'club', $4.22.
The bread was right, the taste had something missing. When I opened the
sandwich, a third of the listed ingredients were missing. I even had to
turn on the overhead lights to detect the mustard.

I'd suggest Antone's Foods, 4324 Harry Hines, 75219 in Dallas as a
better alternative. If you are in Grapevine, try Cero's Hero's @ Main St
@ Northwest Hwy (also since the early 70s).

As the fellow before this stated--you can go to Antones on Harry Hines
nad get them, but you mght also be interested to know that the Tom Thumb
in Turtle Creek Village also carries
them (over by the milk and cheese).

Not sure how many other Tom Thumb stores carry them.

You might check Tom Thumb's. Randall's (same owners at TT's) in
Houston's carries the Antone's po'boys. I am from Houston and used to
love to get the original Antone's po'boys from their deli. The ones at
the grocery store seem similar but are usually not as fresh.

There is nothing special about these sandwich's but for some reason they
are addicting.

They do have them at the TT on Beltline in Irving. They are not quite
as good as the deli ones, as I remember. They seemed too meaty. But
still have that Antone's taste. They also sell the Chow Chow there at
TT. Good stuff.

Exactly. Very addicting.

I have seen the Antone sandwiches at the EXXON super stations. Also,
there used to be an ANtones on Harry HInes down behind the Infomart. It
was the restaurant. Try them.

Do you mean the same Antone's Import Company that used to be located at
Walnut Hill & Central Expwy. in Dallas - next to the NorthPark Inn?
(Now the location of a Bed Bath & Beyond, and the Best Buy - CompUSA,
Wickes, Bizmart shopping strip)

There used to be an Antones on Harry Hines very near Wycliff intersection. They
made great deli sandwiches, served on butcher paper. You could also purchase
imported foods, and wonderful greek style meat/rice wrapped in Grape leaves.

As discussed earlier in this thread, it's still there and still just
as good!

They are still there on Hines. I ate there today.

Hey, I ate there today, too! Our paths may have even crossed there.
I was the guy with the newspaper :) I had the original po-boy, plus a
big delicious piece of baklava for dessert. I noticed today, too,
that they had strung some banners with the name "Antoines" over the
door, rather than their old name "Antones" . Don't know when they did
that, but the food is the same. They are still listed as Antone's in
the phonebook, so I guess they changed it sometime after the phonebook
was printed. I did find it overly warm in there today; don't know if
they were having A/C problems in this heat or what. Since no one
appeared to be smoking, I guess I could have sat over in the smoking
section where the A/C appeared to be working better.

And on HH you can get a 'kit' of cheese, olives, etc to build yourself a
picnic on those fashionable plywood tables. I think those are the same
boards that were there in the early 70s.
