Panchlait is a 2017 Indian Hindi-language social comedy film based on Phanishwar Nath 'Renu''s short story 'Panchlight'. The film is directed by Prem Prakash Modi and features Amitosh Nagpal, Anuradha Mukherjee, Yashpal Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Ravi Jhankal, Brijendra Kala, Lalit Parimoo, Pranay Narayan and Anurima Ghosh in important roles. The film was released on 17 November 2017 and is currently streaming on MX Player.
The film tells the story of a small village in North India that still has no electricity and its people live in darkness, engrossed in their own little sorrows and joys. The villagers are so innocent and inexperienced that they do not know how to light a simple lamp. The only person who knows how to light the petromax is Godhan, who is outcast from the village after he refuses to pay any part of his inheritance to the village and is falsely accused by Munri's mother for singing inappropriate Hindi songs for Munri. The rest of the story focuses on how the villagers manage to lit up the village despite the shortcomings and how Godhan becomes a hero in everyone's eyes.
