I have to admit, when I first heard about a game that is essentially a truck simulator, my firstreaction was, what the hell? Why would anyone bother developing - let alone playing - a game where youlug heavy workloads across Europe at moderate speeds, snail-pace acceleration, and with long, boringslogs of roads between your source and destination? Ah, little did I know how crazy and addictive thisidea was.

Unsuspecting, I installed the game and went about exploring. After finishing the rudimentarytutorial showing me how to operate the user interface, I started doing quick jobs. Minutes turned intohours turned into more hours. I was sitting here, sweating, fretting, CARING about my truck business.Whatever the game developers did, it's a mind trick of the highest order. After me.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is designed to be ... precise. That's the best word to describe it. Truckshave three different types of brakes - and you have controls for all. If you want to shift manually, you can, and that usually means twelve forward gears and four reverse ones, and they do matter whenyou're carrying a load. Fuel economy is critical with 25 tons of something behind you. Narrow streets,so watch them mirrors. Speed limit is only 80 km/h, make sure you don't get a fine. Navigation? Check, proper satnav, the way you'd do driving for realz in Europe. Amazing.

In essence, the game is about establishing and then growing your shipping business. You start small, poor and truck-less, and you work as a contractor for other companies. You don't need to think aboutthe vehicle - one will be provided for you with each quick job, so this also gives you an opportunityto familiarize yourself with different truck models and cabin interiors, different countries, and youalso learn about the world. You discover workshops, dealerships, garages, and centers where you canhire other drivers later on in the game. You gain experience the more you drive - and the better you dothat too, as accuracy, time and damage all count - and you get paid for your work.

After a while, you might get a letter from a bank offering you a loan, so you can actually buy yourown truck. This means you have to take care of everything - maintenance, repairs, fuel, but you alsoget paid more handsomely, as there's no contractor company in between you and the customers. You dohaulage, you gain more experience, and you start paying off your bank loan. If you do things right, youwill get further loans, allowing you to rent a better garage, buy other trucks, and hire your owncrew.

And it all feels real. Oh so real. You care. You really care. I never thought I'd feel attached to avehicle, but the way Euro Truck resonates, it makes you deliver a sense of responsibility andaccountability, and you really zone into what you're doing. Early shifts while the engine RPM is in thegreen band. Slow acceleration and the use of the exhaust brake. You make sure you corner carefully, soyou don't rub your trailer against guardrails or buildings, and some of them can be narrow, properEurope style. You keep the speed down.

Once or twice, I did some minor damage, and I felt really bad. Another time, I actually got a heftyfine in Switzerland (of course), going into a tunnel. The speed limit changed from 80 km/h to 50 km/h,and I wasn't paying attention, and I got an instant EUR280 fine. Damn. A rollercoaster of feelings.

The game is designed superbly. Everything looks top notch. If you're driving in the dark and flashyour lights to warn the incoming traffic on roads without middle separation, they will flash back, asyou'd expect from people who respect road etiquette. You also have to rest, so if you go on for toolong, you'll get a fine. Every eight or nine hours of driving, you actually have to pull into a restarea and take a nap. There's rain, there's fog.

I also decided to drive to Britain, to see what it's like there. Indeed, the speed limit changes, you drive on the wrong side of the road, and everything. Before that, you actually need to board thechannel train. Wicked. It's really cool. The city centers are made simpler, of course, than they wouldnormally be, because something like that would require immense computation, but you still get lovelyscenery, hills, curves, narrow country roads, highways, and the biggest city in Germany, Ausfahrt.

You also get police cars, and they will sometimes stop AI vehicles when they're speeding. There arealso different personality types programmed in the road traffic, and when you want to merge, you willhave anything from polite people to rude idiots trying to compete with your truck. This only makes thegame even more engrossing and fun.

You can also add your own music! Instead of listening to the in-game tunes, you can create your owncustom playlists. Which I did. And then there I was driving while listening to Convoy or CannonballRun. It can't get any more dope than this.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is a fantastic game. I'm so happy to have found it - and decided to play, asI had it in my arsenal for a year or two. It's got everything - a need for speed, a need for skill, drama, tension, you actually care, and the devilishly simple premise turns out to be full of twists andturns - literally.

This title blends strategy and simulation in a unique fashion. Some games manage to pull this off,but most either focus too much on one or the other. Yet, somehow, the seemingly most boring conceptthat could be has been designed into a thrilling, captivating game. Really splendid. I hear there'salso American Truck Simulator. Well, you know what that means. A real convoy!

Later, it is worth changing the small garage (room for three) into a large garage (room for five) for EUR 100,000. When your profits rise, buy another small garage, trucks and employ drivers, and then upgrade the garage. And so on. 2-3 big garages and 10 drivers make your company rather large. Of course, as you are the best and most experienced driver, your salary will be the highest one, but after a while trained drivers may bring you even up to several thousand euro daily. [More about purchasing and managing your garages can be found in the "Garage" chapter]

It is senseless to keep empty space in a garage therefore buy more trucks. They do not have to be awesome, basic ones will do. Each time you buy one, you have to indicate its garage. Decide whether you drive your new vehicle (in that case your current truck will be waiting in a garage for a new driver) or employ a new driver.

Bought trucks should not stand and wait. However, you can sell your previous vehicles and spend the money for upgrading your "main" truck or purchasing even better one. Remember that your aim is growth. A car without any assigned driver is indicated with an arrow. Click on an empty driver icon (below the arrow) and go to the job agency - use the main menu (the icon in lower right corner, next to the bank icon).

Employ new drivers for each truck without any assignment. References and skills are all that matters - the labor costs will be similar [more about employing drivers and their progress can be found in "Employees".]

As in the case of a newly bought truck, you need to find a room for your new driver. Therefore, assign a truck to a new employee. Do not be discouraged by low results; sometimes an employee may bring losses. His/her training takes time.

Follow results of your drivers' with messages displayed in lower right corner. These are mostly income information, but sometimes also costs (when a driver could not find an order and came back empty).

This is the moment, when a garage location is crucial. A garage located on outskirts is not as good and profitable as one closer to the center. The more cities around, the bigger chance for success.
