I am fiddling with this, and intend to attach some proposals here as soon
as I have something to show. However I am currently stuck in that I can't
get the tests in the "tests.py" file to run -

(Just adding it to the [tests] session of buildout.cfg and running bin/test
did not work). Could someone tell me how to run those tests so I can update
them as I make changes to the code?

In what way does running the tests fail? Do you get a traceback or does it
just fail to find the tests?

I recommend using the Dexterity buildout
(https://github.com/plone/buildout.dexterity) which should already be set
up to run tests for all Dexterity packages.

This was added almost a year ago in plone.supermodel 1.1.
