Hi patrick,

i have problems with linking another computer on Local area network to
the main computer running dexen-server. I am doing it at home.

For example,
1) i have started dexen-server -n test & dexen-node -n test on
computer A,
then i started another dexen-node -n test on computer B.

2)When i tried to start a new job by using dexen-cli -n test on
computer A, the dexen-server and dexen-node on computer A will work
and flashes with the tasks done.

3)However, the dexen-node -n test on computer B will remain at dexen-
node is starting on 192.168.3.10. Dexen node has connected to the
server test. Starting 4 slaves. No further messages is displayed or
flashed on computer B.

4) In addition, a check on computer A 's dexen-server, only showed
that only slave 1-4 is active.
Shouldnt it be showing slaves 1-8? given that there is two nodes
connected?

What is the problem here? is it that the two computers are not
connected via local area network properly? or that the dexen is not
functioning properly?

In addition, I have tested the school's computer lab, it seems that
only your computer and nittin's computer is able to connect to each
other, even in the lab, other combinations of computers are not able
to connect to each other.

Hi Tunsing,

The messages regarding the tasks are coming from the master process.
Since there is only one master per job, it will only run on one of the nodes.
So you will those messages only on that node.

By default there will be 4 slaves per node running.
However all of the slaves may not be busy.
It depends on the workload. Some slaves may never be assigned any
task to execute. Especially if the tasks are executing fast, some slaves might
be idle.

Regards,
Cihat

Hi Cihat and patrick,

I tried running the same example file on two different computer
setups,
One at my house and the other in the school lab.

The successful connection in the school lab btw patrick and nittin's
computer managed to assign the same example file to 8 nodes. Even for
the dexen-node that is not on the dexen-server computer, it will
display messages like transaction received.

However, for my computer at home, the dexen-node that is not on the
dexen-server, only displays itself as connected to the dexen server,
but is then idled.

Thus there was a stake difference btw the response of the dexen system
on the two different setup running the same file. Hence i suspect that
something is wrong, as the system seems to only use one node in my
home local area network.

I have a few questions, Will the dexen system be able to work in my
home network, apart from the school's network?
is it supposed to work on any local area network?
If so, what is the settings that we need to set in our network? Do we
need to config any firewall settings?
Is that any ways that i can check my home local area network if it is
working properly?

Thanks tungsing

Hi Tungsing

So you start the server on comp1, and the a node on comp 1. And I assume the node connects to server OK. It should say something like this:

Dexen node is starting on 192.168.0.192
Dexen node has connected to the server abc.
Starting 4 slaves.

Then you start another node on comp2
What message do you get? Something similar to the above. If yes, then it should be connected OK.

When you now run a job, if the job is very fast (i.e. the tasks are not running any complicated simulations), then it may be that the slaves on comp2 will never get used (i.e. there is always a free slave on comp1)

For firewall setup, in win7, you do the following:
  • log in as admin
  • control panel>system and security > windows firewall
  • then on the left click
  • "allow a program or feature through windows firewall"
  • click "change settings"
  • click "allow another program"
  • click "browse"
  • go to "C:\program Files\Side Effects Software\Houdini 11.0.658\python25\python.exe"
  • click "open", and click "add"
  • then tick the box for "home/work"
