In its first versions, the CDR file format was a completely proprietary file format primarily used for vector graphic drawings, recognizable by the first two bytes of the file being "WL". Starting with CorelDraw 3, the file format changed to a Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) envelope, recognizable by the first four bytes of the file being "RIFF", and a "CDR*vrsn" in bytes 9 to 15, with the asterisk "*" being just a blank in early versions.[56] Beginning with CorelDraw 4 it included the version number of the writing program in hexadecimal ("4" meaning version 4, "D" meaning version 13). The actual data chunk of the RIFF remains a Corel proprietary format.
Use CorelDRAW's powerful vector illustration tools to turn basic lines and shapes into complex works of art. Create curves with many versatile shaping and drawing tools. Add creative effects to your vector artwork with effect tools like Contour, Envelope, Blend, Mesh Fill, and more.
Edit bitmaps and vectors knowing you won't harm the original image or object. Create block shadows, symmetrical illustrations, and perspective drawings all non-destructively, and apply a number of reversible adjustments and effects in CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT.
Draw objects or illustrated scenes in perspective, faster and easier than ever. Choose from 1, 2, or 3-point perspective, draw or add an existing group of objects on a shared perspective plane, and move and edit objects freely without losing perspective.

Has anyone found a real solution?
Going back in to Corel and saving as AI isn't an option as I no longer have access to the software, but have a lot of files created with Corel.

Corel Draw is a vector based drawing and illustration program. It is primarily a Windows application, but was ported to Mac OS, Mac OS X, Linux, CTOS and OS/2. It competed against Aldus Freehand, Adobe Illustrator, and Micrografx Designer.
Both software allows you to create freehand drawings and vector graphics using their powerful tools. In CorelDRAW, the Live Sketch Tool with the help of a drawing tablet really creates a realistic freehand drawing that almost looks like drawing by hand with pen and paper.
If you are new to graphic design, CorelDRAW is easier to get started with because of the less learning curve, and the program itself is more intuitive. You can do most of the basic graphic design tasks and schematic drawings in CorelDRAW.

Coreldraw actually handles color better. That is why it is used by screen printers. You can Google in the color management engine and Corel is superior. When you zoom right in to vectors adobe has issues.
Web Draw was before its time and never really gained the kind of attention as Paint Shop Pro. Unfortunately Web Draw didn't borrow more features from Paint Shop Pro or integrate closely with it and it would have been good to be able to export Photoshop Documents from Webdraw or other tricks like that. It could have potentially found itself a space in the emerging market of SVG for Handheld devices, and competed against products like Ikivo.
Comparison (from the point of view of technical drawing) of Corel Draw 9, iGrafx Designer and Adobe Illustrator 8. Fairly detailed. The comparison criteria paragraphs are also interesting in showing the features that the writer finds useful.
One drawback, for a mixed Mac and PC office, is that CorelDRAW only has limited support for Mac-friendly file formats and Adobe PDF files. But given the keen price, this is a limitation most users will be able to live with.
