Greetings from the DevToaster team.
First off, we have some bad news. DevToaster's iPhone developer
account is still in transition to a corporate account. This transition
is a legal requirement for us to sell applications under the
DevToaster name on the App Store, and has been in process for a number
of weeks now. Until that transition is complete, we do not have access
to the tools that we need to build applications for the iPhone App
Store.
Once that transition is finished, we can submit to the App Store and
Apple's review process can begin. Apple has requested a demo unit of
the ElmCanII-WLAN and we don't anticipate any major holdups in the
review process.
What does this mean for the release date of Rev? We can't predict
Apple's timing, but since this is the last week of November and many
people in the United States are on Thanksgiving holiday starting
tomorrow, it appears that the release will slip into December. We are
optimistic that this transition will be completed soon (we finally
received a request for our paperwork today, which we immediately faxed
back!), but we simply don't know when it will be completed.
We are using every possible means to expedite this process, and we ask
for your patience—we understand the delay is frustrating, and it is
for us as well.
On to some good news! We've been pleasantly surprised by the number of
orders for our OBD hardware companion; in fact we've nearly cleared
out our stock! Thankfully our next batch of ElmCanII-WLAN devices is
nearing the end of production and will be on their way to DevToaster
HQ the first week of December. We don't anticipate any need for
backordering as of yet.
Clearly there is lots of excitement about Rev and the ElmCanII device,
and no one is more excited than we are. The iPhone platform has opened
up something really different and really exciting for gearheads (or
petrolheads for our friends across the pond). Rev, with the iPhone/
iPod touch's high-res screen and blazing fast performance, gives you a
beautiful, user-friendly, very straightforward interface to everything
about your vehicle. Rev doesn't ruin the look and feel of your
favorite ride, either—with the ElmCanII tucked away, you can simply
walk up to your vehicle where your iPhone/iPod will automatically
connect to your car's network. When you're done, you simply tuck your
iPhone/iPod in your pocket and walk away. There's nothing to mount to
your dash, no specialized gauges to wire, no power cables to run
(though we do recommend a car charger for your iPhone/iPod for long-
term use). One of our enthusiastic customers contacted us to ask about
the release of Rev, and told us how excited he was to remove all the
clunky custom gauges off the dash of his 2005 Nissan 350Z. We know the
feeling!
One really important benefit to Rev is how flexible it is, and will
be. We thrive off customer feedback. We love hearing from you! And all
the features and changes to Rev in the future will be driven by your
feedback. Just as an example, when we shipped Rev Lite, a sizeable
percentage of our tens of thousands of users took the time to e-mail
us and asked that we offer data logging and export in Rev. As a direct
result of that feedback, Rev will ship with our very cool new data
logging feature. It supports logging of up to three OBD metrics
simultaneously alongside your current acceleration vectors, and then
either view those results on your iPhone/iPod touch, or e-mail the
results to yourself as CSV data. With that you can use something like
Microsoft Excel, or your favorite data analysis package, to accurately
track your vehicle's behavior and performance over time. You can see
screenshots on Rev's Features page at:
http://www.devtoaster.com/products/rev/
So we will continue updating Rev with great new features and changes
based off your feedback and our research as time goes on. We already
have lots of great new features in mind. And unlike all other
"scantool"-style devices, when we here at DevToaster release an update
to Rev, you'll be able to download it with one tap from the iPhone App
Store. The new version of Rev will update right over the air and be
ready to launch in minutes. It really is that simple. On top of all
that, all updates to Rev will be free.
We're excited to get Rev out to everyone, and we hope you share in our
excitement. We're working as hard as we can to clear the hurdles with
Apple and get the app up, and we sincerely apologize for the delay.
We'll let you know as soon as we have any more information. As usual,
please e-mail us with any questions or feedback, we try to respond to
everything personally.
Regards,
The DevToaster Team
