Figure out ways to capture a photograph and remove all motion in it. In essence capture all of the in-animate objects in a scene while people or other motion sources are animated or are continually interacting.
The awesome project was started by Aditya and Bibek. A newer algorithm was proposed, which can be discussed further here.

If I have understood the problem sufficiently then, it is possible to make a comparison between the past and the present two dimensional pixel array of the picture captured. There must be a third such array which stores the most persistent of pixel states or acts as a reminder of previous states. Since, stationary objects tend to have the highest persistence they will be the only ones which will continue to persist after a few seconds of interaction with the camera.
