DevOps world there’s been an explosion of tools in release (jenkins, travis, teamcity), configuration management (puppet, chef, ansible, cfengine), orchestration (zookeeper, noah, mesos), monitoring, virtualization and containerization (AWS, OpenStack, vagrant, docker) and many more.

Explain BMC Atrium Orchestration tool is used in DevOps

Disclaimer: ex-BMC

AO is mostly about integrating Remedy ITSM , monitoring, etc)  ; it also can fill the role of a general purpose orchestrator .  It is comparable to HP/OpsWare's Operations Orchestrator, or Microsoft SCOM, or Vmware vrealize Orchestrator.

In the open source tool chain world we don't have an equivalent tool, because that's what scripting languages are for.

The only real reason you'd use it is if you have other BMC tools at your company since AO might make the integration easier.  It's a rather unwieldy installation and has numerous quirks.  though the main BMC field dude that stands behind it (Volker) is awesome.

Cheers

EX-BMCer as well. I agree with Stu.
Atrium Orchestrator is a general purpose orchestration tool especially for machine to machine orchestration. That said there are many such general purpose automation tools around.
But just because a tool can automate tasks doesn't mean it is purpose built for managing Devops or end to end software delivery. In addition to the ability to automate, what matters a lot is the nativity to the DevOps tool chain.
A DevOps automation platform will need to orchestrate various tools in the pipeline such as - defect tracking systems, Source code management systems, artifact repos, unit testing tools, code review tools, test automation tools, configuration management tools like Chef/Puppet, cloud providers etc. So in my honest opinion look for something that has out of the box integrations to such tools and years of experience of solving the software delivery automation problems.
