Yeahthat's a nice strategy. Another one to consider is Renfield (my favourite guy ). The way the board is laid out, as you are falling diagonally, when you get to the bottom you will be put at the top of another slope, so you can do a lot of damage.

On 11-5 it recommends you keep reloading the level until you get the two green pegs in the center spiral. Be careful if you do this while trying for the Ace of Adventure achievement. When you get your final "Efficiency" bonus, the restarts count against you just as if you failed the level.
