In the same dropbox folder I have uploaded another powerpoint file and that one opens with no problems. My guess is the size of the other one is the issue. Tip to dropbox - would be great if the error message could be more specific rather than just saying "something went wrong" eg. "we can't open this as the file is too large - max supported file powerpoint file size is xxxMB.
We have a Powerpoint presentation in Dropbox with a link to it on our site that our clients access when they want to give the presentation to an audience. But when they click the Dropbox link on our site, they see the error message ".pptx files are supported but something went wrong" and there is a Download box under that. So they can still download it, but is there any way to avoid them seeing the error message? I'm sure it scares some people away and does not look professional. The Powerpoint is password protected, but I'm not sure that is the reason for the error. Any ideas?

What I really need to know is how to keep the file that has been uploaded to Dropbox safe so that it cannot be overwritten. We have had people make changes to the Powerpoint and somehow the file gets overwritten with their content. I'm not sure how this could happen.
Yes. LO supports reading and writing to MicroSoft Office Open XML (OOXML) file formats. The support is however not perfect and it is possible you may experience problems depending on what is required in terms of layout, formats, effects, embedded content, etc.
Before presenting live I suggest to open document on the same version of Microsoft PowerPoint that will be presented. To see if everything is presented OK. My experience is to have little trouble like font size and layout.
One maybe not the most elegant option is to convert presentation to PDF file, but in this case if you would like to have some fancy changing slides then this option is not the one you are looking for.
1 - Consider also to create a ppt-version. If MS format is needed I prefer ppt
2 - I recently needed to prepare a back up version for a Windows PC with requested format pptx or ppt. I decided to copy a portable version of LibO and a copy of my odp-presentation to an USB stick. Thus if there would have been a problem with my PC, I use the USB stick and present via the LibO portable version. Portable version 4.1.4.2 is already available. Maybe this is an alternative for you.
There can and there are.
Assume LibreOffice is working internally in german language (inherited from star-division). When you save in odf-file german language is used. If you save to pptx-files of Microsoft everything is translated to for example some Shakespeare-english and has to be translated back by another translator, when you open again in LibreOffice.
These transformations are not perfect, so you may add small changes to your product by every save and reload cycle.
This highly suggests that the original fonts are not installed. Check in the Properties side pane if font name is displayed italic. This is the way Impress tells you it has not found it in the system installed font.

Hi, thank you for your response. I am using LibreOffice 7.5 and CentOS Linux 7. There is no place where the font name is in italic. It recognizes well the font (sorry for the misunderstanding) but the issue is that sometimes the font is displayed bigger than it should (i.e sometimes the titles of the slides are bigger than they should be and they occupy 2 rows of text instead of one).
pptx is a foreign format. Either the file has been created with M$O PowerPoint under Window$ and you meet a compatibility issue, or you created it with LO Impress but recording it pptx needs a conversion and some feature could not be translated faithfully.
Also, though the style feature is not as developed as in Writer, you might also have conflict between styling and direct formatting.
If possible, attach a sample file containing only 2 slides: one correct and one defective. Describe in the attaching post what to look for (comparison between good and bad slides).
In respect to MS format In general I stay as long as possible in LibO native formats and save only the last saved version in an MSO format and try to abvoid the x-formats. I made the experience that a pdf-file is in most of the cases sufficient. Many people send out files in MSO or LibO or other formats when a pdf-file is sufficient. Depending on the situation you can even secure a pdf-file against copying and changees. The pdf-export function in LibO works very well. (I am using 4.2.4.2.)
In the case of presentations I am also often asked to provide a ppt or pptx copy as a fall back solution is something happens with my PC or connection of my own PC is not possible, etc. For this I always carry a USB stick with a portable LibO version on it and my presentation. All I need is PC to plug the USB stick and can run on LIbO my own presentation.
As for MSO formats on PCs using MSO 2003, 2010, 2013 there seems to be also quite some problems, at least with the presentation templates; I am asked to look into this problem. Most likely I will recommend to change the entire company PCs from MSO to LibO.
Impress behaves well with either the ODP or PPT formats, but PPTX causes all kinds of problems. If you have a lot of text in there, and simply want to extract it and start over, you might get some help from this early Q&A. You will see some bug reports linked in that discussion, too.
Others might have different advice for you, but I did a fair bit of checking into this (on Ubuntu and Linux Mint with recent versions of LibO Impress), and the PPTX format was consistently a problem, and a problem in the same way. Stick to ODP or PPT and you ought to be fine.
When I choose save as PDF from Powerpoint, it publishes BUT, many of the images (created in powerpoint with clip art and shapes) are disappearing from the PDF. Some of my pptx files have converted without issue (using the combination of pptx & Acrobat 10.1.2) - however, if I go back in an make even a simple change (even to text) it will NOT convert to PDF accurately - once again images go missing and I get an error message.
I have tried repairing my Acrobat - that didn't change the results. I also tried going to an earlier version of Acrobat reader and that didn't work either. I even uninstalled and re-installed Acrobat, re-started my computer - etc.
The slides that just have text convert to PDF without issue AND I have successfully exported this to PDF completely in the past. The onlychange that I've had is an upgrade to a newer version of Adobe. I've not made any changes to the Powerpoint Program and the only changes I made to this file are a couple of text changes... so, I"m not sure what's causing this.
Out of curiosity, what do you get if you try the MS plugin to convert to PDF, rather than the Acrobat tools? I am not suggesting to change, although it might be a workaround until you find the problem.
I haven't tried the MS Plugin to convert - I don't use the Acrobat tools. The conversion is built right into Powerpoint 2007 - I just Save As - Other format and choose PDF and it automatically converts to PDF. I've not used PDF Maker or PDF printer and Powerpoint 2007 no longer has the Print to PDF option.
With WORD/PPT 2007, there are basically 4 methods of creating a PDF, assuming you are working with Acrobat and not a 3rd party product. The most fundamental is to print to the Adobe PDF printer. If you have installed Acrobat, that should be a printer on your system. PDF Maker shows up as an Adobe menu on the WORD menu bar. It is also one of the options in the File>Save as PDF (not sure of the correct name, on the worng machine to check). There is another File>Save as that is the MS plugin. It is not real clear which is which. As I mentioned, printing to the Adobe PDF printer is the most fundamental process, but does not include links and such. It used to be that PDF Maker was just a front end for the printer that added PDF Marks to allow links and such. WIth AA9, they changed the processing somewhat.
I'm working with Acrobat - not a 3rd party. Perhaps I'm missing something but my Word and Powerpoint 2007 do NOT have the option to Print to Adobe PDF printer - it's NOT listed or available (I believe from my research that Microsoft no longer has that availalbe due to issue with Adobe?). The ONLY way I can find to create a PDF (in Adobe) from Word and Powerpoint 2007 is the Save As function. The MS Plugin was for the "Save As" function - I already have that in place.
This issue is recent... I've created a complete PDF of the document pictured above a couple of iterations ago. The only changes I made to the document were some texts changes... I then went to Save As PDF and this time... you see the result... pieces of images missing. I'm wondering if there is a bug or something is the newest update of Adobe Reader 10.1.2? Or if there is somewhere else I should be looking to try to resolve the issue.
