Vacancy Announcement

 

In 2000, Dalit journalists sought to challenge the embedded caste based discrimination in Nepali society with media awareness and established the Jagaran Media Center (JMC). The center has trained and promoted Dalit empowerment by giving them the means to create their own media through journalist training in research, print, video, online and radio production.

JMC also operates Radio station Radio Jagaran 93.6 MHz in Rupandehi district, Dalit Research and Resource Center, Radio Programs, Tele- Serial and e-newsletter. JMC has its central office in Kathmandu, with a regional office in Butwal-Rupandehi district.

 

Job Title:                                 Program Director

Reporting to:                         Chairperson

Duration:                                One Year (Renewable)

Duty station:                          Kathmandu

Expected date of start:         1 May 2010

 

Responsibilities

  • The Program Director will report to the Chairperson about the office activities;
  • The Program Director is responsible for the overall program and management;
  • The Program Director is responsible for developing new, creative, innovative programs;
  • Responsible for active networking;
  • The Program Director is responsible for writing proposals and reports; 
  • The Program Director is responsible for promotion and public relations of JMC;
  • To advocate for the Human Rights of the Dalit community.

  • Experience in general management (program and project management, finance, administration and Human resources)
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to plan own work and manage conflicting priorities
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to motivate and guide others
  • Ability to act as mentor for office staff

 

Leadership:

  • Proven supervisory ability and technical leadership

Client orientation:

  • Ability to identify 'clients' needs and appropriate solutions
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with clients

Communications:

·         Proven and sustained communication (verbal and written) skills, including ability to prepare reports and conduct presentations by clearly formulating positions on issues, articulating options concisely conveying the maximum necessary information, making and defending recommendations

  • Good communication (spoken and written Nepali and English) skills (including the ability to write reports)
  • Able to advocate for the rights of Dalits

Teamwork:

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective partnership and working relations
  • Respect for diversity, including gender and caste balance
  • Ability to build a positive team spirit
  • Ability to act as a leader in the office

Managing performance:

  • Ability to provide direction to colleagues at various levels, delegate appropriate responsibility, accountability and decision-making authority
  • Makes sure that roles, responsibility and reporting lines are clear to each staff member
  • Proven ability to provide strategic direction and ensure an effective work structure to maximize productivity and achieve goals
  • Ability to monitor and appraise program implementation progress against given deadlines and requirements of JMC
  • Ability to monitor and appraise office processes and procedures
  • Ability to monitor and appraise staff performance

Qualifications

Education

Masters in Social Science or other related fields

Work Experience

3-5 years experience in Program management: planning, execution and (program and finance) reporting. Experience gained in Social welfare organization, preferably in Governance, Caste Discrimination or Media. Extensive experience in people management (hiring, firing, performance reviews)

Language

Excellent Nepali and English communications skills (both verbally and written)

Other skills

Advanced-user level skill in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
