Hello Blue Button 2.0 Community, Join us July 15-17, 2025 at the virtual CMS HL7 FHIR Connectathon!
We are excited to announce that Blue Button 2.0 (BB2.0) will be hosting its own track where participants can test out a new sandbox environment for BB2.0 that is modeled on a new data source.
In this session, participants can test connections to the new sandbox environment, and see the benefits of the new version, including:
Conformance with the latest relevant implementation guides
Extensions and CMS-specific codings represented as FHIR resources
Additional details about this session are below.
There will also be a track for the Beneficiary Claims Data API (BCDA), another API within our family of claims data APIs at CMS. Details for the BCDA session can be found here.
Register for the Connectathon by June 30, 2025.
We hope to see you there!

Blue Button 2.0 Track
The CMS Blue Button 2.0 API provides over 53 million Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries access to their claims information. This API represents the CMS implementation of the Patient Access API.
Blue Button 2.0 data currently comes from a single FHIR server that sources information from the CMS Chronic Conditions Data Warehouse (CCW). CMS is testing out a new, integrated data source, for a potential next version of the API. As part of this evaluation, there are several objectives for this track:
Testing out a prototype of Blue Button 2.0 v3 using synthetic data and gathering feedback
Testing Blue Button 2.0 for SMART v2.2 conformance
Testing Blue Button 2.0 data for conformance with selected Implementation Guides (namely, CARIN for Blue Button 2.1.0 and US Core 6.1.0)
Soliciting feedback on the implementation of Patient Merge within Blue Button 2.0 v3
Testing and gathering feedback on a more conformant approach to publishing CMS-specific terminology
Testing the representation of partially-adjudicated claims using the ExplanationOfBenefit resource
Testing a new representation of Blue Button 2.0 Coverage resources to align more closely to the US Core Coverage profile
Reminder: Registration for the Connectathon closes on Monday, June 30.
