Preliminary evidence indicates that the leading-edge tapes, that present a minute rear-facing step to the leading edge flow, play a major role in deturbulator performance effects and alone may account for one of the two recurring polar shapes.  More measurements are needed to confirm this.  However, at this time, it appears that properly sized and located rear-facing steps may be used to achieve significant performance enhancements at specific airspeeds.  For more on this, go to http://www.deturbulator.org/Summary.asp .
