Adam,

The LX5000 log is much better.

I still need temperatures. Some were already entered, but not for the extra points.

Also, any comments about the quality of the extra speed runs would help decide whether or not to include them.

In the attached spreadsheet, I have included every point, averaging the ones that were measured more than once.

It looks good for a single flight, especially in the middle range speeds.  Your flying was exceptional.  I can never hold the speeds as well as you did.  You will need two more baseline measurements, if you are lucky.  This is a good start.

Jim

Hello Jim,

Just went through my video, data and your baragraph trace.  The speed runs are as follows:

0 = 35

1 = 40

2 = 45

3 = 50

4 = 55

5 = 60

6 = 65

7 = 70

8 = 75

9 = 50

11 = 80

12 = 85

12a = 95 (between 12 and 13 – was actually a good run for data I thought)

13 = 50

14 = 60

15 = 70

16 = ordinary run at 80

17 = 100

Can’t believe it, but I totally missed out the 90kt speed – damn!   I hope the above data matches up with what you were thinking.  I’ve got a simulator check ride on Mon and Tues, so after that I’ll put a document together with mods, pictures and descriptions for your website after then.

Best Regards,

Adam

Adam,

I still need you to identify the speed runs that I have labeled in the attached GIF file.  Just list the numbers and the speeds.

I’ve started on the new log file, but cannot finish until I am sure I have the data properly associated with the speeds you flew.

Also, please send me picture(s) of you and your glider, and descriptive material (i.e., location) for your Project page at www.deturbulator.org.

Thanks,

Jim

Adam,

I am copying this to the Standard Cirrus  group as an update to your original despondent note so they will know yhat your first attempt at taking data was actually very successful and nicely done.  The same was true for Kiley/Shipp.  Piloting is not a problem.  Quality depends mainly on picking the right weather conditions.

Hello Jim,

Thanks very much for this, at the moment three speeds seem to be easy to identify and remember – 50/60/70 (and never beyond!).

For the 50kt run – I would only use sector 9 and 13 and remove sector 3.  #3 was an odd one, the only speed that I jotted down to tried and re-do.  As you can see, I tried many times to get some really good consistent data to use.

I would also remove the second set of data for the 80kt run (sector 16?) – In my notes I noticed I wrote down that it was an ordinary run, with the vario regularly fluctuating.

Thankyou very much for your kind words on my speed holding ability, it certainly helps when the air is silky smooth (for the most part), have it trimmed and use only two fingers and a thumb to fly!  I certainly use a different method when it comes to thermic conditions though :)

Please find attached *.xls, it has the updated temps included.  With these positive results, I’ll now line up two more 10,000’ tows to get more data!

Looking forward to seeing the adjusted polar soon!

Adam Woolley
