Hello all:

Welcome to the Detroit Droid Dev Users Group.

I see this group as an outlet for Android Developers in the Detroit area to help each other out while keeping on top of the latest news and techniques being used when developing for the Android platform.

I would be interested in learning what brought everyone to checkout this group and what topics/technologies you would like to see covered.

At the moment, I spend the majority of my time developing for Android. With that being said, I have quickly compiled the below list of topics I am interested in:
  1. Android layout tips, techniques and best practices.
  2. Comparisons of development environments for Android including developers experiences with each.
  3. New features and interesting tips for the future when developing for Ice Cream Sandwich.
  4. Using the Cloud with Android applications.
  5. Android apk file decompilation.
Anyways, I would invite you to add to the list.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving (although us Canadians celebrated already...).

Regards,
Don Ward

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to Android development but one of my goals for 2012 is the
"master" the platform. Whatever that means.

Location:
Sounds like Don can get a room at Quicken and I'm looking into getting
space at the Madison, a block or two from the Compuware building.

Meetings:
I'd like to have a kick off meeting sometime soon. Even if it is
just to discuss topics and group direction.

What are everyones thoughts on this?

Hi,

I have attended several of the Detroit Dev Days and always find them
very interesting and informative. I would also look forward to
attending some Android specific meetings as well as I am always
interested in learning more.

I have done a fair bit of Android development through work and also
playing around in my spare time. Here's a short list off the top of
my head for some topics I would like to see at such meetings:

1) Android ADK development.
2) Android NDK development.
3) Tips for developing UI's that work across various screen sizes
(Phone, Tablet, Big Screen TV)
4) Idea's related to developing Android applications for Google TV.
5) Game development for Android using only Java.
6) Developing an app using Pure Android vs. Hybrid (i.e. embedded
webview with HTML/Javascript) and finding the right balance between
the two, using Phone Gap might fit in here.
7) Best practices for managing Activity Lifecycle.
8) Just about anything now that I am thinking about it.

Looking forward to this.

Hi Marco,

I've been hunting down possible speakers for our first meetings.
Hopefully they can get some conversations started.
Let me or Don know if you would be interested in presenting on a
topic.

I think a having some Lightning Talks and Demo Nights would be a good
idea. Let us know if you are interested in doing a 10 min talk or
have something you would like to demo.

Hello,

I manage the intranet (a Java based portal) for a global company, and I'm interested in the nexus between Java-based mobile applications and employees
(Sales, Support, C-Suite, et all).  We already deliver this information through the web portal; however, how do we best deliver this data through mobile devices.

While I am not new to Java, I am new to Android Development.

For me, I seek to learn more of the potentials (incl. pitfalls) of developing for the Android platform.

Hi Dave,

I would be willing to do a talk for one of the first meetings.  My only concern is whether or not I will be able to attend on the decided night due to schedule conflicts.  If you like you can put me in tentatively for the first or second meeting and I will confirm once a date is decided on.

As far as a topic goes.  I was thinking that there might be interest in having me walk through an example of how to build C2DM into an android application, with a simple working demo.  That would probably take at least 30 min to get through.

If you would rather me choose something that I could get through in 10 minutes I could probably come up with something less involved.  Alternatively, if you want to suggest a topic I could probably put together 10 minutes without too much trouble.  At first I was going to suggest a quick walk-through covering the tools needed to de-compile android applications but then I saw your post about having someone else present that topic who could get deeper into the subject than I would be able to.

Anyway, Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
     Marco

I'd love to see a talk on c2dm. Timely and interesting at least for me.
