MDNRE Public Hearing
RE: Renewable Operating Permit for Incinerator for Greater Detroit Resource Recovery Facility (INCINERATOR)

MONDAY, MAY 17, 2010
(6-7 PM - Informational meeting)
7-10 PM - Public Hearing
International Institute
111 E. Kirby

Please spread the word to get high attendance and community comment. Public Comment closes June 3, 2010.

Zero Waste Detroit Concerns:

Incinerator is in the 8th most polluted zip code in Michigan.
There is an alternative to incineration.
Incinerator is 4th largest emitter (2x Marathon refinery) of NOX. NOX creates smog.
Asthma rates higher near incinerator.
Region is “out of attainment” for particulate matter.
Michigan has the greatest racial disparity for pollution burdens.

Requests to MDNRE:
More stringent pollution levels under MEPA and Rule 901
Permit should be based on actual burning, not on capacity
Increased monitoring: annual averages are inadequate
State has the authority to address cummulative impacts
