Oh, boy … this is going to go over well.

The Tigers have traded for Cleveland reliever Paul Sewald. He was Seattle's closer at one time, then was a trade deadline acquisition of the Diamondbacks in 2023. He then signed as a free agent with Cleveland this past offseason where he has been not what the Guardians thought they were getting, I'm sure. From Evan Petzold at the Freep:

According to Chris McCoskey at The Detroit News, who broke the news of the trade, the Tigers are sending a player to be named later and cash to Cleveland:

Boy, the Tigers seem intent on not trading any of their better prospects — and are getting the kinds of players you'd expect them to get when they don't give up much value.

Make that the Tigers will send Cleveland a PTBNL *or* cash for Sewald.

Matt Manning is out of options, so he’ll have to clear waivers.  I’d grab him if I were a bottom-feeding GM.

Sewald was legitimately good in 2021-23.  Now he’s 35 and injured, he seems like long shot.  I’d bet the return price is variable based on how he recovers.  If he’s great, they get Javier Osorio; if he never really recovers, they get $10k.

He’s got a $6M contract.  Next year, there’s a $10M mutual option, with a $1M buyout.  Harris might be earning some goodwill cleaning up other GM’s messes for them.  I don’t know if that’s worth anything.

Tigers should have tried to get another rehabbing Cleveland pitcher, Shane Bieber, who is supposed to be coming back soon after TJS last year.

So Canada is now the home for multiple famous Biebers?

Dave Dombrowski didn't wait for Manning to clear waivers. The Phillies sent 18-year-old outfielder Josueth Quinones to Detroit for Manning.

Quinones is playing in the Dominican Summer League. Looks like he has a good eye and good bat-to-ball skills but little to no power:

Again, Manning pitched a combined no hitter just 2 summers ago and we’re only what maybe 3 or 4 years from when he was ranked one of the top 100 prospects in baseball.

From that… To initially being DFA’d today to make room for a trade deadline reliever who is injured.

Brutal!

He is still only 27 so I won’t be surprised if he can rebound and still have a few good years.

Manning converted to a relief pitcher this season after a couple of early starts for Toledo.  I wonder if the Phillies will keep using him as a reliever or try him as a starter again.

Amazing, 4 years-ago I thought Manning was going to be the best of the Tigers' pitching prospects at the time (even better than Skubal).  He totally profiled as a #1/#2-type starter with a power pitcher's arsenal.  But he lost velocity and consistency on his fastball (his velocity would vary wildly from game-to-game and inning-to-inning) and his secondary pitches never developed beyond mediocrity.  He hasn't even had Tommy John Surgery or any other serious arm issues yet so you can't blame that.  If the Tigers' pitching braintrust couldn't fix him I'm not sure the Phillies can.  (But, watch, he'll end up being pretty good with the Phillies).

Good damage control by Harris here.  There was enough waiver-wire interest in Manning that he was able to swing a trade.  The Tigers got 18-year-old outfielder Josueth Quinones from the Phillies.  Not a blue-chipper but certainly a reasonable lottery ticket.

Should have traded Manning 3 years-ago.
