Vest sets the side down 1-2-3 in the 9th. The Tigers are going to the playoffs!

Skubal will start Game 1 against someone on Tuesday. Let’s see what happens :-)

I know fans are really down on the Tigers because of their late-season collapse and garbage offense, but the goal is to get to the playoffs because anything can happen in the playoffs, especially if you've got a great starter like Skubal.

Hinch really needs to start thinking more about his lineup.  Greene really should only be starting against lefties and Malloy needs to be starting against lefties.  Jones should be full-time and not a platoon player for the playoffs.  Carp needs to start against righties and lefties.  We can't keep going with these awful lineup choices otherwise we might not score a run in the playoffs.

Sorry, Greene should only be starting against righties in the playoffs.

Astros miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016.  They were bigtime chokers as well down the stretch.  There have been lots of chokers lately.

As Roger said, the Tigers will be in the playoffs.  As Peter said in a reply, the Astros missed making the playoffs as a wild card.

The Tigers currently have a half-game lead on the Guardians in the A.L. Central.  The Guardians play against the Rangers this evening.

At least the Tigers actually clinched it with a win rather than having to stay up and see if the Astros lost again.

Celebrating a little on the field actually seemed like the right call because of that. Not a cheap win to wrap it up in Fenway.

Skubal & Mize will presumably be the first 2 starters.  Cleveland is obviously the most likely opponent, but it could be in Detroit or Cleveland depending on who wins the division.

But the Tigers still have a shot to be seeded ahead of Boston if they win again tomorrow. They would have the same records but Detroit obviously has the tiebreaker now.

In that case, I guess the Tigers could play either the Yankees or Toronto - whichever one doesn’t win the division tomorrow.  Kind of crazy that we go to the last day of the season and nothing is decided in terms of seeding in the AL playoffs except that Seattle has a first round bye.

Don’t think I’m wrong on anything above, but could be…

So we win the biggest game of the season with Carpenter never making an appearance and Malloy, who mashes lefties, stuck on the bench.

Carp never got to bat because the Sox used all lefty pitchers.  I still think it was idiotic not to start Malloy in Fenway Park against a lefty.
AJ got away with it thanks to Baez, Jones, Perez's defense, and a gutsy performance from the pitching staff, plus the Red Sox were hacking away in a lot of their at-bats.

The Tigers once again scored only 2 runs. Yes, they won. But this is not sustainable especially against playoff teams.

Jones, Baez (in 1 at-bat), Dingler, Ibanez, and even Meadows had better at-bats today than the guys who are supposed to produce (Torres, Greene and Tork, plus Carpenter didn't even get to play).  The "Big 3" crapped the bed today, but got lucky their teammates bailed them out.  I guess that's teamwork.
But, seriously, we can't keep expecting Greene, Tork, Torres and Carpenter to come up snake eyes in run-scoring situations if we want to make a playoff run.

I wonder who starts tomorrow for the Tigers?  Paddack maybe?  Jake Rogers?  Zach McKinstry?
I don't think we should use Melton so we can save him for the 1st round.

Was just thinking that Houston isn't officially eliminated.  Cleveland could still lose tonight and Houston wins in LA and then they are tied going into tomorrow.

I would love to see Cleveland blow it at the very last minute and come up short.  That would mean Tigers at home vs Houston for the Best of 3.  I like our chances there!

Cleveland and Texas are tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth. Adolis Garcia tied it with a long, solo homer to left in the top of the fourth.

Paddack has been announced as the starter tomorrow. Good. Let him eat some innings and as many other pitchers on the staff as possible get a couple of days of rest.

The Tigers travel department has their hands full. They need to plan for flights to and reserve rooms in:

Cleveland
New York
Toronto

Or of course just plan for a return flight to Detroit from Boston :-)

Paddack is going to have to eat innings no matter how many runs he gives up.  Tanner Rainey and Paul Sewald will probably get some action.  It could get ugly.  Too bad we couldn't call up Urquidy, but they'd need to clear a 40-man spot for him.
We could see McKinstry pitching tomorrow.  Probably not Rogers since he'll probably be starting at catcher.

I wonder if Flaherty might get an inning or two? I know it’s short rest but assuming Skubal and Mize start games 1&2 of the playoffs then Flaherty would be going more than a week between appearances if he doesn’t pitch tomorrow.

I think the Tigers have their own plane, so that makes things easier. The crew just has to file a flight plan. If they win the division, they can fly back to Detroit Metro or Willow Run. I wonder how they get between Comerica Park and the airport. Probably a bus? That way they don't have to bother with everyone driving to the airport or getting their own town cars/cabs/Ubers. They can just park at the CoPa.

But, yeah, the hotels part has to be interesting. I suppose they already were in touch with their usual hotels in those cities a few days ago. Maybe MLB starts lining up hotel rooms in cities that might host playoff games ahead of time.

Cleveland just clinched a playoff spot on a walkoff hit-by-pitch of CJ Kayfus in the ninth. It was the first HBP by Texas reliever Robert Garcia in his MLB career. The final score was 3-2.

If the Tigers lose tomorrow they will face Cleveland in the 1st round.
If they win and Cleveland loses then the Tigers face either the Yankees or Blue Jays.

Seems to me the incentive is for the Tigers to lose.

If the Tigers win and Cleveland loses, they would *not* face Toronto or New York because they would be the division winner. They would face the worst wildcard team, which would be Cleveland.

If they win and Cleveland wins, Cleveland wins the central because of the tiebreaker.  Then Boston becomes the worst wildcard team and faces Cleveland. That’s when the Tigers would face New York or Toronto -the team that doesn’t win the East.

And if they lose, they are straight up the worst wildcard team and would therefore face Cleveland, the worst division winner.

I’m pretty sure those are the scenarios left.

All 3 games are home games for the best teams.   The Tigers will not host any games in this series even if the win the Central.

Yes they will.  The division winners are ranked as the Top 3 seeds, regardless of record. So whoever wins the central is the 3rd seed and will host the entire Wild Card series.

Wrong. If they win the Central, they're the third seed and host the sixth seed. Division champs automatically get the top three seeds.

Thanks for the correction.  I thought they changed that after taking so much sh*t about winning percentage.
