With their 5th-round pick, the Tigers selected yet another collegiate
RHP, Declan Dahl, out of Louisiana Tech.

One interesting pick was in the 11th round, Will Adams.  Never likely to be confused with Willy Adames, Will is a big left-handed slugger whose defense is described as "maybe not good enough to stick in right field."  But he can hit, and there's a genuine open question if he might be able to hit for power - he's shown it in spurts.  The interesting thing is that the MLB scouting combine rated him as the 102nd best prospect (a third round pick), but the Tigers got him with the 337th pick in the 11th round.  Typically that's an indication that he's determined to go to college (is Will's case, Louisiana Tech), but if the Tigers took a flyer on him, maybe they have some idea how to sign him.  That would be a small win.

A bit more color.  There were 10 players in the top 100 who did not get picked at all.  One withdrew from the draft (it was James Clark, whom I mentioned the other day), but the other nine were simply unpicked.  I guess in all cases it's because they were known to be committed to going to college.  So, it's not like teams just don't know what to do with their late round picks and burn them on college players for no reason.  The Tigers must have some idea how to land Adams.  We'll see!

Good to hear. I know pretty much nothing about the Day 2 guys beyond what I can find online but it looks like a lot of kids that didn’t do much in college but the scouts must see something they think the org’s coaches can work with.

I was reading some more about the Adams situation.  Two issues point to him coming to Detroit.

(1) The Tigers drafted 14 college players out of 20.  College players usually get smaller bonuses on average, which should leave plenty of extra bonus pool money for the high schoolers like Adams.
(2) Apparently, LSU already has a really good first baseman, which is where Adams is most likely to make his way in the world.  Adams might find a year in the outfield (or worse, at DH) is not in his best interest.
