Harris looking for diamonds in the rough again. Tigers have claimed James Outman off waivers. He was DFA'd by the Twins on June 6th. Baez was moved to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40 man roster. Question becomes who gets sent down or DFA'd?

My guess is Short gets DFA'd and sent to Toledo. With Torres back, McKinstry is the backup infielder. Outman, for some reason, becomes the left-handed part of a center field platoon with Vierling.

I just saw that the Phillies have traded a pair of minor leaguers to the White Sox for former Tigers top pick and current journetman outfielder Derek Hill. At least Outman didn't cost us any players.

At first glance, I would think this move means Jones is on thin ice given it’s another OF.  But Outman bats left, not right.

I wonder if Outman is the late innings defensive replacement guy? Vierling and Perez are an adventure out there and Carpenter isn't much better.

Jones really brings no value. Perez and Vierling can be who hits for Keith/Carp late in games (I am NOT endorsing this strategy, but I don't see Hinch changing) but I don't want to see both of them in the field late in a close game.

Outman had a nice year with the Dodgers not too long ago but he has struggled (injuries may have been a factor) since. He also strikes out a ton. Not to mention that Outman is not the best name for a hitter.

I share the list's general lack of enthusiasm for the constant acquisition of players who have been released or let go for very little by other teams and I am not a big fan of this acquisition.  But Outman could surprise us; I recall a season on which I had him on a fantasy team and he did very well.  OTOH, the intervening years have not been encouraging.  And, while I realize he is an OF,. not a pitcher, I'm a little haunted by the experience with Flaherty, with flashes of brilliance followed by long periods of what can only be considered mediocrity if one chooses to be very generous.

Outman had some good power numbers in the minor leagues but he was always old for his level.  He didn't make his major league debut until he was 25 in 2022.
In 2023, his first full year in the majors at age 26 with the Dodgers, he hit .248/.353/.437 with 23 homers in 483 AB.
He tanked in 2024 and only hit .147/.256/.265 in 136 AB with the Dodgers.  They demoted him to AAA.  He has struggled to hit since 2024 in small sample sizes with the Dodgers and Twins.  He has a career 35% strikeout rate in the majors and 10.7% walk rate.

Outman has a career .576 OPS vs. lefties and .729 OPS vs. righties.

I don't know how well-regarded his defense is, but he has played quite a bit of CF in the majors with the Dodgers and Twins, so I assume he's not too bad.

Seems weird to bring in another lefty hitter.  We really need to get Jones off the roster and replace him with a better righty-hitting option.

I kind of want to see organizational soldier Ben Malgeri get a shot as the righty platoon hitter to replace Jones.
Malgeri probably is just another AAAA player, but he's been hot with Toledo and has been beating up on lefties.  He plays ok defense in CF.

I watched an interview with Malgeri the other day.  Seems like a nice guy who has worked hard and hasn't given up.

Pretty amazing Derek Hill is still around at age 30 and has managed to carve out a 7-year career with 0.8 WAR in the majors.  Good for him.
Hill was a bit of a longshot 1st-round pick (23rd overall) by Dombrowski in 2014 out of high school.  Great athlete who could have been a track star or even a good college wide receiver with NFL potential, but not much of a hitter and plagued with injuries in the minors.  He was known to make spectacular catches in the Tigers' system.

Funny that Jack Flaherty was drafted 11 positions (34th overall by the Cardinals) after Hill in 2014.

Matt Chapman, who has had a decent career as a 3B, was drafted 2 positions after Hill.

The Tigers' 2nd round pick in 2014 was Spencer Turnbull, who turned out to be decent for a little while.
