Uh oh...

Time for Harris to start shopping some prospects for additional pitching help.  I don't think JV is going to help anytime soon.
Nobody at Toledo is going to help the rotation.  SGL or Ty Madden?  I don't think so.

Melton is probably still a few weeks away.

Who is closer to jumping out the window? Your average Tiger fan… Or Scott Boras.

Unless Verlander is close to coming back, I think we’ll probably see Harris make some desperate deal and we’ll end up with a Charlie Morton or Chris Paddack type like last year.

I mentioned that scare in Skubal‘s last start where he grabbed his arm and told Dingler to come out to the mound. He said he was OK and then proceeded to strike out the side… But maybe in retrospect, it wasn’t such a good idea to keep pitching. Ironically, it was the 7th inning. One time when maybe he should’ve only gone 6 :-)

Skubal's elbow has always been a ticking time bomb.  It was one reason to trade him 2 years ago.  He puts a ton of stress on his arm throwing that hard and with that much spin, and he's already had 2 previous elbow surgeries.

Looks like it could be back to Pitching Chaos.

I suppose they could try Hurter as a starter although I like him in his current bullpen role.

Would assume Drew Anderson has to move into the rotation at this point, given he was a starter last year.

Maybe this lowers Boras/Skubal's asking price and the Tigers could come back into the picture?

Tigers are apparently calling up Ty Madden.

Holton is opening again tonight. Hinch is a genius for only using him for 3 batters last night :-)

I imagine Mize and JV will be back soon, although with the latter you never know. Obviously nobody can really replace Skubal, but a rotation of Valdez/Mize/Montero/Flaherty/JV is serviceable, though not anything to get excited about.

I like the idea of stretching Anderson out. Maybe coinciding with having Flaherty pitch out of the pen where he can go all out for an inning or two and maybe also keep him out of his own head a bit.

Our middle relievers like Hurter, Anderson, DeJesus, Hanifee, (and maybe Madden) will need to step it up.  They'll be getting a lot of work in the non-Valdez/Mize/Montero starts.

When Melton comes back in a few weeks (we hope), he'll probably be a reliever at first.
Jobe probably won't be back until September, or maybe not at all.  I wouldn't count on him.

We have some depth to survive without Skubal until August.  You never know, maybe the team will rally together and play some inspired baseball.  I don't think anyone is going to run away with the AL Central so we should still be in contention when Skubal comes back (but we can't really afford many more injuries to key players).

The early speculation from some of the baseball writers on Twitter is he will be out 2 months, as it is considered routine surgery.

If he was to come back right after the All-Star break, Tigers can probably manage until then, especially if Mize is back on time. Any longer though and you start to wonder if the season might slip away.  Though of course, Skubal doesn’t have any impact on 80% of Tiger games, so nothing changes in terms of them needing to find ways to win those games :-)

No.  It's the opposite.  It's the time to add a few good new young players for next year.   The whole point of even competing this year was to exploit that "last year with Skubal".  Now this year is toast. It's time to focus on the McGonigle years.

We should trade everyone on the team over the age of 28 for the best players we can get under the age of 25.

We can hang around in contention in the AL Central (although we don't need further injuries).  I don't think anyone is running away with it.

I doubt Harris sees it that way (yet).

I just think you might see Harris trade somebody like a Max Anderson, Jace Jung or Hao-Yu Lee for some pitching help.  I'm not saying I would agree with this.  It could depend on the status of Verlander.

Right, we might be able to get him on a short-term deal so he can "prove" he's healthy.

Well, one thing we know now is that Skubal won’t win 3 CY awards in a row.  Too bad because he was in the mix so far.

And a reminder about a discussion we had on the list a year or two ago. The risk of putting all the chips on the free agent year or taking a long-term deal when the player is healthy. I’ve lost track of what the Tigers actually put on the table a year or two ago… And I’m not even sure reports were necessarily accurate… But obviously the rewards are so huge in this era but so is the gamble that the player is going to stay healthy and perform at the same level, etc.

One thing I would worry about is Skubal rushing back too quickly because of this contract year. In Hinch’s comments earlier today, he said Skubal is obviously frustrated and very anxious to do all the hard work to get back ASAP. Hopefully, he doesn’t overextend himself in the rush to pitch again.

Always a possibility, but I think both Boras and Skubal would want to show that he’s 100% after the procedure.

All the comments I’ve read from various MLB executives… who of course always remain unnamed… basically suggest there’s zero chance Skubal gets anywhere near the deal he is looking to get if he can’t prove that he’s healthy before the end of the season. Sort of self-evident I think.

In fact, I’d almost go as far to say the $400 million dream is pretty much dead unless Skubal comes back after the All-Star break and is as dominant as he has been.  If he can’t pitch again this year, he’s a guy turning 30 in November who couldn’t stay healthy past April.

I wonder if Skubal's elbow issue was known in the off-season.
"Loose bodies" in the elbow can be a pre-existing issue but not cause any pain, until they start causing pain.

It's possible the Tigers shopped Skubal in the off-season but teams shied away because of his elbow issue.

That seems doubtful.  There was so much media coverage, every small rumor was being reported.  Other front offices had no real incentive to keep such a big collective secret, and at least some incentive to justify their not making the deal.
