Erie SeaWolves to be rebranded by 'Last Week Tonight'

John Oliver on his show "Last Week Tonight" invited minor league teams to apply to be rebranded by his staff — with no input from the team. Detroit's Double-A affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves, were selected from the 47 applicants.

Major League Baseball has to sign off on the rebranding for this to proceed. I hope they do, because I'm curious to see what Oliver's staff will come up with for Erie.

It’s hard to imagine it will be something cool or flattering.  Something akin to “Banana Slugs” is probably the best case.  

Maybe we should try our own, see if we can do better.  Erie Ghosts was a team name I used in a fantasy league.  Sticking with the wolf theme, how about Werewolves?  Eerie Werewolves could be 365-day Halloween motif, with a “ruined” stadium.  The between innings mascot races could take an interesting turn, if the werewolf chased the opposing mascot and, if it was caught, mauled it with lots of fake blood.

Werewolves as a name and Michael's ideas for marketing are inspired, if perhaps not totally family friendly. 

My son is about to graduate from UC Santa Cruz so I take offense to the Banana Slugs comment. ;)

I like it.  If we want to lean into the eerie-vs-Erie misspelling, we could choose a creature with a double-letter and remove one, such as Helhound.  Although, if Paul thought werewolves are not so family-friendly, hellhounds will be less so.

I love the Eerie Werewolves idea. The hype video could be a riff on the “Young Frankenstein” bit:

Werewolves? 
There wolves. There castle (or ballpark, in this case).

Anything banana-related probably would be viewed as a ripoff of the Savannah Bananas.
