A new contender for back up SS:

Zack Short is back in the Tigers system

Tigers have acquired Short from the Nationals in exchange for either cash considerations or a player to be named later. Short will report to Triple A.

I have seen Zack in quite a few games in person at Principal Park in Des Moines, both as a member of the Iowa Cubs and as a Toledo Mudhen.  There has been nothing to suggest that he would be adequate as fill-in at the major league level.  He did not stand out as a AAA player.  The Mudhens visit Iowa in early June; I hope I get to see him play again, as that would mean that the Tigers have not had to call him up.

I get it as AAA filler. I hope if the Tigers need to call someone up it’s one of the kids even if it’s not a prospect per se. Either way someone would have to be added to the 40-man.

Zack is not a great player, but he looks a bit worse than he is because his batting average is so low compared to his secondary average.

Career Totals
Level    BA   SecAv
AA      .230  .370
AAA     .217  .367
Majors  .177  .276

Career MLB walk rate of 12%, which is well-above MLB average, but career K rate of 29%.  He hits the occasional homer, but the problem for Zack is that he's never made consistent contact.  He's like a very poor man's Rob Deer.

Short will be starting at SS tonight against the lefty Tolle with McGonigle on the bench for a scheduled day off.
I'm sure we might see McGonigle pinch hitting against a righty later in the game if it's a close game.

Peter,

I think even that comparison is very unfair to Deer 😂!

The game has resumed in the 8th and Hinch let Short bat to lead off the bottom of the 8th vs. righty Garrett Whitlock.  Short flied out and is 0-3 tonight.
I guess Hinch is determined to give McGonigle the day off.  Sigh.

Carpenter just hit a pinch-hit single after Short flied out.  Tigers trail 5-2 with Carp at 1B and 1 out.

Sorry, Keith led off the 8th with a single, but Short flied out and Carpenter struck out pinch hitting for Jones.  Keith is still at 1st with 2 outs.

Wow, Dingler just hit a 2-run double with 2 outs in the 8th after Vierling walked to make it 5-4..  Greene struck out swinging to end the inning.  At least we're back in it.

Short actually gave the ball a ride on his fly out to CF in the 8th, but I wish McGonigle had pinch hit for him.

Tork, Perez and Lee can't do squat against Chapman in the 9th and lose 5-4.  At least Jansen pitched a scoreless inning.
At least McGonigle got some rest.  ;-)
