The Tigers fell behind early against the Red Sox on Friday afternoon, but not far behind. They managed to score a good bit later in the game, and won, 11-3.
Braiden Ward of the Red Sox led off the top of the first with a walk and stole second base, and Kristan Campbell homered. Two batters into the game, Justin Verlander and the Tigers were down, 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kevin McGonigle walked, Max Anderson was safe on a fielder's choice as Mr. McGonigle was out at second base, Parker Meadows walked, and John Peck tripled to drive in Mr. Anderson and Mr. Meadows.
In the bottom of the sixth, Matt Vierling singled, went to second on a walk to Austin SLater, and scored on a throwing error by thirdbaseman Justin Barry. Jace Jung singled to drive in Mr. Slater. The Tigers had a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Tomas Nido walked, Wenceel Perez was hit by a pitch, and Matt Vierling homered. Then, after a pitching change by the Red Sox, Austin Slater singled, Jack Penney tripled to drive in Mr. Slater, and Jace Jung singled to drive in Mr. Penney. The Tigers had a 9-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Eduardo Valencia was safe on a fielding error by Frederik Jimenez, nd scored on a double by Matt Vierling. After walks to Ausstin Slater and Jack Penne loaded the bases, Jace Jung singled to drive in Mr. Vierling.
In the top of the ninth, Andrews Opata homered.
Justin Verlander gave up two runs on a home run and one other hit. He walked two, and struck out four in two innings of work.
Drew Anderson gave up no hits and no walks in 3 1/3 scoreless innings of work. He struck out four.
Will Vest pitched a perfect inning in the seventh, with one strikeout.
Tanner Rainey gave up one hit and one walk, but no runs in the eighth. He struck out two.
Jack Little gave up a solo home run in the ninth, but no other hits. He struck out one.
