Again, it seems ridiculous to think about the Tigers somehow getting back in the race when as they enter play today, they are still 11 games under .500. But, because the central division is so weak, the Tigers find themselves only 7.5 games out of 1st.

And they have 14 games left with Cleveland and Chicago, the two teams currently tied for the division lead.  So there’s definitely time to gain ground with a couple of good winning streaks.

Will be interesting to see how Harris approaches the trade deadline if the Tigers are only a few games out of first, no matter the win – loss record.

You are absolutely right that 7.5 games behind is not “out of it.”  Of course the Tigers would have to start playing better to catch up, but returning injured players are a reason why that could happen.  Too bad.  It’s likely to bring about another half-hearted trade season, and we’ll kick the can another year on building an actually good team.

All we need is another year of all the stars aligning and sneaking into the playoffs, and all of a sudden the narrative will be “Wow, the Tigers have made the playoffs three years running, what a great team!”  We might get that narrative anyway, if they just get close.

Tigers gained a game on Cleveland today as they were playing the White Sox, so one of them had to lose.  So make it only 6 behind Cleveland.

Tigers' management could be in a tough spot at the end of July.  The Tigers could well be only 2-3 games behind a playoff spot by then.
I would argue they should still be "sellers" at the deadline even if they are only 2-3 games behind, but Tigers' management might not think that way and decide to "go for it" with Skubal, Mize, Flaherty, etc.

Besides, they could still be "sellers" and still make the playoffs.  It happened in 2024.
