Tigers blown saves

I guess I didn’t quite realize it but the announcers on tonight‘s game say the Tigers have blown 19 saves this season.

Geez, we’re having a discussion about a possible tear down of the team and yet, if they had even just saved 7 of those games they would be over .500 and right in the thick of the playoff race.

Yep, despite the horrible hitting slumps and bad fielding we are right in the thick of things with even an average bullpen.

Ironically, the Tigers actually had some of the best bullpen stats in MLB for much of June, but the recent blown saves have just killed them.

Maybe a dumb question:

Does a blown save necessarily mean a loss?  I think, for individuals, more than one pitcher can blow a save in a game.  Are there team blown saves?

What I do know is the Tigers have lost 15 games this season in which they were leading in the 7^th inning or later.

Yes, according to a quick Google AI, the Tigers did manage to come back and win “3 or 4” of those 19 games :-)

One example was on June 1 against Tampa, where the bullpen blew a big lead but the Tigers still won 10–9.

So they haven’t lost all the blown save games, such as today, but they have lost a significant number of them, something like 14 or 15.  You can’t expect perfection from a bullpen and you’re always going to blow some leads, but if the Tigers only lose 7 or 8 of those games they would almost be in first place and have a wild card spot.

For sure. 

I’m just mocking A.I….which is taking over the entire world next Thursday apparently but can’t tell me the specific number of games the Tigers have won after they’ve blown a save.  

“3 or 4” this morning… So now I’m guessing after today, it’s “4 or 5” :-)
