Tonight's lineup vs. lefty Carlos Rodon (3.50 ERA in 7 starts with 41 Ks in 36 IP).
Casey Mize (2.58 ERA in 10 starts) gets the start for the Tigers.

  1. Kevin McGonigle (L) 3B
  2. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  3. Matt Vierling (R) CF
  4. Riley Greene (L) LF
  5. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  6. Jahmai Jones (R) DH
  7. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B
  8. Zach McKinstry (L) SS
  9. Ben Malgeri (R) RF

Predictable platoon lineup from Hinch with Carp and Keith on the bench.
Greene is actually hitting lefties well this year (.275/.408/.413).  He's been close to the same vs. lefties and righties.
McKinstry gets the start against a lefty even though he is 0-17 vs. lefties this year.

Good luck to Malgeri in his debut facing the hard-throwing veteran lefty.  Malgeri had some trouble hitting 95+ fastballs in AAA this year.

Tigers lose 4-3.  Apart from Dingler, who was 3-4, the big bats were a combined 0-13.  Tigers had a good chance to tie it at 4-4 in the 6th but Greene and Tork struck out with Vierling at 2nd and nobody out.  Greene swung and missed at a meatball hanging slider to strike out.  He tried to hit it to the moon and missed.  Tork swung and missed at an inside slider on a 3-2 pitch.  Greene also got thrown out easily at home in the 4th trying to score on a single to LF by Lee.  Another questionable send by Joey Cora.

Keith seems to be back in the doldrums.  Maybe his wrist is bothering him again.
Malgeri with a couple of solid singles in his big league debut.  Good for him!

Mize was cruising along toward a quality start but broke down in the 6th, allowing a 2-run shot to Jazz Chisholm and then was charged with another run after Holton allowed an inherited runner to score on an RBI double by Austin Wells with 2 outs.

So the Tigers streak of starts allowing 3 runs or less is over.

Skubal gets the start tomorrow vs. lefty Ryan Weathers.  So we'll be seeing Jones in the lineup again.  Sigh.
