D-Backs lead 1-0 in the bottom of the 5th on a Corbin Carroll solo shot to CF against Skubal with 1 out in the 1st.  The lefty-hitting Carroll crushed a 97-mph high fastball from Skubal to CF.  Impressive.
Tigers should have traded Greene for Carroll straight up a couple of years ago.  ;-)

Tigers' offense asleep again vs. Zac Gallen.  Greene and Carp are useless.  The bottom of the Tigers' order is a sinkhole.
McGonigle is getting no breaks either.  He keeps hitting the ball for hard outs.  He has another lineout today.

Carpenter in particular is off to a horrendous start.  Hitting .095 with 11 K’s in 21 AB’s.

We just have to ride this out, but it's depressing that we're seeing a collective slump yet again from Greene, Carp and Tork.  They didn't hit in spring training either.  I guess whatever they were working on it spring training isn't working.    Greene looks like he's trying to take more pitches but seems completely lost.  When he does make contact he often tops the ball into the ground.  Can we have the 2024 Riley Green back?

McGonigle and Keith, the youngest hitters on the team, are at least holding their own.  In fact, McGonigle and Keith could have even better stats if it weren't for some bad batted ball luck.  Both of them have just missed at least a couple of homers and McGonigle has hit some hot shots for outs.

Frustrating to see the offense struggle in warm weather.  1 homer in 6 warm weather games.  Yikes!

McGonigle robbed again in his first at-bat.  He scorched a ball 103-mph 403 feet to deep CF but Victor Scott ran it down and made a nice catch.
In his 3rd at-bat he hit a soft double to LF so it evened out.
I guess if you're going to put the ball in play often like McGonigle does you're going to get some bad luck and good luck.

Tigers up 3-0 after 5.  Framber looking good so far.  Do we have enough BISN?

And the Tigers finally have their second home run of the year, hit by the same guy who had the first: Dillon Dingler.  Greene was on base.

Riley also has a RBI single, off a LH no less :-)

Still 3-0 with the Tigers batting in the 6th.  Can’t ask for much more from Valdez in his first two starts as a tiger

Tigers win 4-0.  Another good start from Framber and not much drama from the bullpen.
Nice to see Greene and Carpenter show some life.
The way things are going Dingler might end up with more homers than Carp or Tork this year.

There are 155 games to go. :)

Though as far as trends, I wouldn’t be shocked if McGonigle ends up leading the team in OBP.

Oh, I know, but I do like Dingler’s power potential.  He’s got a good power swing.  I’ll certainly take 15-20 homers from him but more than that isn’t out of the question.  The next Cal Raleigh?  :-)

Skubal-Valdez is shaping up to be a heck of a 1-2 lefty punch.  Flaherty starting tomorrow against his original team...maybe he'll be focused for a change.

Tigers up 9-6 in the top of the 8th.  They were up 7-1 at one point but Flaherty melted down again and it's become closer.

Tigers with 3 homers today: Carp, McKinstry and Torres.

Tork batting 8th today.  Hasn't helped him. He's 0-3.

With JV on the IL and Flaherty struggling, we really only have a 3-man starting rotation right now.
Hinch might need to go to bullpen chaos again, unless he wants to try DeJesus as a starter.  I don't think Drew Anderson is going to be the answer.  I guess we might see Montero called up.  Ty Madden isn't ready (if he'll ever be).  Madden didn't even make it out of the 1st inning last night for Toledo.

The power finally showed up. 4 HR’s in total as Vierling hit one late.  11-6 final.

Montero has been called up and will start in place of JV tomorrow night.  Was really looking forward to the Sunday night national telecast and JV‘s Detroit return. Will still be great to watch, but can’t say Montero generates quite the same excitement level!

Obviously, they won’t pull Flaherty from the rotation this soon… but Fetter should dedicate the next week to just working with Jack :-)

Flaherty was really good in 2024.  Just not the sane pitcher anymore.  He flashes good stuff occasionally and can miss bats but way too erratic and a head case.  I know he's had back problems in the past so I don't know if that's something he just has to deal with.  Good luck to Fetter trying to fix him.

Flaherty also had 3 HBP today in addition to 4 walks. He was constantly in trouble and wild. Only gave up 3 hits but runners were on base from the get go.

Flaherty is the first Tigers' pitcher since 1925 to walk 4+ batters and hit 3+ batters in the same game.
The last Detroit pitcher to do it was Lil Stoner in 1925.  Cue jokes about "Stoner"....

Maybe Montero will throw a complete game shutout tonight.  He's done it before (in 2024 against the Rockies).  🙂

Montero reminds me of Flaherty.  He can look very good but then can go off the rails.  We'll see.

Montero with a shutout through 4 tonight.  Tigers lead 2-0.  Carp with a 2-run homer.

As I mentioned, Montero can be very good then go off the rails.  Montero was good for 4 innings tonight but fell apart in the 5th.  Poor defense from Torres didn't help. Tigers now losing 4-2.

Some nice at bats from the Tigers in the 6th to load the bases with no one out. Meadows is having a good game and fought back being down in the count with a hard hit single and then a stolen base. Tork had a good eye to take a walk and then Baez gets the sac fly to cut the lead to 4-3.

Tigers still batting with one out.

Tigers lose 5-3.  Sloppy defense cost them.

Hinch pinch hit for Keith and Carpenter tonight...nothing changes.

As we know, the media spends an awful lot of time claiming Hinch plays 12 D chess yet anyone could see that it would be Jones and Vierling facing the Cardinals tough RH relievers in the late innings of a close game, since Keith & Carpenter were taken out.

And sometimes, Hinch’s moves don’t even make sense within his world. He let both Jones & Vierling bat in the 9th against a tough RH closer and left the lefthand-hitting McKinstry on the bench. I think Zach has a better chance of drawing a walk or scratching out a single, setting up Greene as the tying run at the plate. Instead, it’s Jones hitting against a RH for the first time in like 115 games, so of course he strikes out to end it.

Brilliant!

Meadows has been decent lately.  He's at .757 OPS and has 3 stolen bases in 3 attempts.
We'll definitely take that from him.

That 6th inning was a disappointment for the Tigers.  They had bases loaded and nobody out, but all they got was a sac fly from Baez.  Jones and Torres both grounded out.
Jones was pinch hitting for Keith against the lefty reliever Romero.

Just let Keith and Carpenter play.  It's not as if we have Tony Phillips and J.D. Martinez to pinch hit for them.
