Yankees outlast Tigers

Jasson Dominguez and J.E. Escarra hit back-to-back home runs with one out in the first.  The Tigers ended up  tying the game in the bottom of the eighth, but losing it in the ninth.  The Yankees won, 4-3.

In addition to the back-to-back home runs in the top of the first, Justin Verlander gave up a solo home run to Seth Brown in the top of the second inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Dillon Dingler singled, and Zach McKinstry homered.

In the bottom of the eighth, Brett Callahan doubled, stopped at third on a single by Max Anderson, and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Jude Warwick.

In the top of the ninth, Miguel Palma walked, Kaeden Kent singled, the runners advanced on a wild pitch, Jace Avina was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, and Josh Moylan walked to drive in Mr. Palma.

Justin Verlander gave up three runs on three solo home runs.  He gave up a total of four hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings.  He struck out five.

Brant Hurter pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings, with three strikeouts.

Kenley Jansen, just back from the World Baseball Classic, pitched a perfect inning in the sixth.  He struck out two.

Kyle Finnegan pitched a one-two-three inning in the seventh.

Burch Smith pitched a perfect inning in the eighth, with one strikeout.

Johan Simon gave up one run on one hit and two walks in the ninth.  He left with the bases loaded, and was responsible for the game-winning run.

Logan Berrier came on and got the last out of the ninth.  He issued the bases-loaded walk that allowed the game-winning run to score.

Tomorrow, the Tigers will host the Pirates.  Mike Clevinger will start for the Pirates, while Casey Mize will start for the Tigers.
