Montero and now Flaherty today are starting for the second time this spring. But I know Verlander hasn’t pitched yet. Hope that’s just a ramping up slowly because of his age thing…

Although on a quick skim, it doesn’t look like Valdez has pitched either. Maybe because they were late signings, he and JV are taking a little more time to get ready?

As I mentioned in the game recap, Framber Valdez did pitch the first three innings today.  Since most pitchers pitch two innings in their first start of Spring Training, I presume that he pitched a simulated game
earlier in the week.

The reason usually given for a veteran starter pitching a simulated game is that the team knows that the guy can pitch, and the team wants to give the major-league manager a chance to see what a prospect (or two) can do against big league hitters.  That is valid as far as it goes.  It is also true that major league veteran pitchers are not anxious to spend two hours traveling to and another two hours traveling back from a game at some other team's park just to pitch two innings.

Mr. Verlander will start on Friday against the Red Sox in Lakeland.
