Ugly start to spring training for the Tigers.  It's very early...no panic.  🙂

The Tigers' starter today was 28-year-old lefty Emmanuel De Jesus, a non-roster invitee.   De Jesus actually pitched ok.  He was the victim of Max Clark's clownish defense in the outfield.

De Jesus has 2 career major league starts, for the Mariners in 2023.  He's pitched in Korea the last 2 years (3.81 ERA in 60 starts, 62 appearances).  He'll probably be fodder for Toledo's rotation.

The Tigers' minor league pitchers are mostly garbage so far this spring.  I hope we stay healthy!

Only Skubal and Flaherty from the rotation have pitched… And I don’t believe we’ve even seen most of the potential bullpen arms yet either in these first few games, other than Anderson.

The minor league pitching depth is a concern, though.  That's why I hope our pitchers stay healthy.

Would imagine both Montero and Melton will start at Toledo in that rotation. Gipson-Long as well.  Haven’t heard anything about Ty Madden but my impression was he was going to be healthy this spring.

I thought Melton had a good shot to make the rotation this year before they went on the last-minute signing spree and got Valdez & JV.

From the little bit I’ve read, the Tigers apparently see him as a full-time starter, so I just don’t see how he makes the roster in that role unless there’s an injury in the spring.

I see no reason to have Melton in Toledo at all. He was very effective in the majors last year- arguably our best pitcher not named Skubal. He had a 2.76 ERA in 45.2 innings, 36 K, WHIP 1.007. Keep him as a middle relief/spot starter. It’s not like the bullpen is that fantastic as it is. I think it is pretty indisputable that Melton is better than Flaherty but I guess we have to let Flaherty at least start the season in the rotation.

Montero is no great loss.

I was wondering about Ty Madden below. Turns out today is a split squad day. Steve mentioned that Mize will be pitching against Toronto but the Tigers are also playing Philadelphia. And Madden gets the start!

Madden hasn't had TJS, but he had a shoulder injury last year.  He's in the Reese Olson club.

I thought the Tigers-Jays game was on TV here in Toronto, so flipped it on for a second but none of the sports networks are actually carrying it.

Have no fear though, the MLB network has the Tigers Phillies game. Just watched Ty Madden set down all 6 hitters he faced. And the Phillies have their main starting lineup going today so a good early spring test for Mr. Madden.

Tigers' non-roster invitee, 29-year-old lefty Emmanuel De Jesus, who has pitched well in camp, had a strong start in the WBC for Venezuela yesterday vs. Israel.  Of course, the Israel team is pretty weak (it's Harrison Bader and some AAAA scrubs).  De Jesus allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 5 IP with 8 Ks and 0 walks.  De Jesus spent the last 2 years in the Korean league (similar to Drew Anderson).  De Jesus probably won't make the Tigers' opening day roster (they'll need to open up a 40-man roster spot for him), but he might be decent depth to have in Toledo.

Did you see who is managing the Israeli team?  A legendary former Tigers manager…

Brad Ausmus!  :-)

The Tigers have added DeJesus to the 40-man roster. Troy Melton was moved to the 60-day IL to make room.  So we won't see Melton on the mound at any level until late May at the earliest.

DeJesus is now in the mix for a possible spot in the Tigers bullpen to start the season.

What kind of stuff does DeJesus have? Peter has pointed out that it would be nice to have a hard throwing lefty in the pen; is DeJesus a hard thrower?

I don’t think DeJesus is a particularly hard thrower.  He’s more like a Tyler Holton who relies on hitting his spots and good command.
