Tigers punish Panama

The Tigers split up today.  Those who stayed in Lakeland beat the Panama team from the World Baseball Classic, 2-1.

Dillon Dingler led off the bottom of the second with a walk, went to third on a ground-rule double bu Austin Slater, and scored on a single by Jace Jung.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Kerry Carpenter hit a solo home run.

In the top of the fourth, Allen Cordobaa singled, went to second on a single by Edmundo Sosa, went to third as the Tigers turned a double play on a grounder by Miguel Amaya, and scored on a double by Johan Camargo.

Jack Flaherty pitched three scoreless innings for the Tigers.  He gave up two hits, and he struck out three.

38-year-old Kenley Jansen gave up three hits in the fourth.  He allowed the only run scored by Panama in this gamae.

Kyle Finnegan walked one but no runs and no hits in the fifth.

Tyler Holton pitch a perfect inning in the sixth.  He struck out one.

Keider Montero pitched the last three innings, to get the save.  He gave up two hits, allowed no runs, and struck out three.

The Tigers will have the day off tomorrow, as several come home from the Dominican Republic.  On Friday, Justin Verlander will face the Red Sox in Fort Myers.

Montero was then sent down to Toledo after that game today.  Have to feel a bit bad for him, but there’s obviously little room on the pitching staff for him at the moment with the starting rotation set, plus Anderson as well. When would he pitch?

Not a bad option to have in Toledo in case somebody in the rotation gets hurt.  I actually think Montero might eventually make a decent reliever.  He might be able to max out his fastball more in shorter stints.

Montero's relief outings against Seattle in the ALDS were intriguing. It seemed like he could throw harder since he wasn't trying to pace himself like he would as a starter or bulk guy.
