TIGERS FINISH SWEEP, TAKE ON CLEVELAND

The Detroit Tigers trampled on the Chicago White Sox, 18-2. It was the second-largest margin of victory in the majors this season. Miguel Cabrera had four R.B.I.s including a two-run home run. Andy Dirks, as a substitute, also drove in four runs and also had a two-run R.B.I. Jhonny Petalta drove in three runs. Austin Jackson scored three times. Max Scherzer did a fine job to get the win. Mark Buehrle was the loser.

The Indians held off the Royals, 9-6.  Shelly Duncan hit two home runs for a total of five R.B.I.s.  The Royals scored three runs in the ninth, but they were two far behind.  Jeanmar Gomez was the winner, and Jeff Francis was the loser.  Because the Indians' bullpen gave up those three runs in the ninth, Chris Perez was eligible to pick up a save.

The Angels beat the Twins, 4-1.  Bobby Abreu hit a solo home run in the first, while Joe Mauer homered in the fourth to cut the Angels' lead to 2-1.  Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells got R.B.I.s  in the eighth.  Joel Pinero was the winner, and Kevin Slowey was the loser.  Mr. Slowey now has a record of 0-4.  Jordan Walden picked up an easy save.

On Labor Day in Chicago, the Tigers and White Sox will play two games.  At 1:10 Central time, Philip Humbler (8-8, 3.63, 1.16 WHIP) will come off the D.L. to start for the White Sox, while Anthony Swarzak (3-5, 4.14, 1.28 WHIP) will make his sixth start of the season for the Twins.  In the nightcap, lefty Scott Diamond (1-2, 4.82, 1.39 WHIP) will take the mound for the Twins against Zach Stewart (1-3, 5.48, 1.65 WHIP).  The Royals take a long flight to Oakland and get to play in the daylight on the first game of the series.  In that game, Felipe Paulino (2-10, 4.30, 1.47 WHIP) will oppose Rich Harden (4-2, 4.55, 1.33 WHIP).

The Tigers will go to Cleveland (as Barack Obama comes to Detroit;  go figure).  Ubaldo Jimenez (8-10, 4.70, 1.42 WHIP) will take the mound for the home team, while Doug Fister (6-13, 3.26, 1.16 WHIP) will get the ball for the Tigers.  Both pitchers were acquired just before the end of July.  This game will begin at 1:05 Eastern time. (Looking ahead, Tuesday's game, the only evening game of the set, will feature Rick Porcello versus Fausto Carmona. On Wednesday afternoon, Justin Verlander will face Justin Masterson.)

TIGERS BEAT INDIANS, INCREASE LEAD

The Tigers beat the Indians, 4-2.  Victor Martinez hit a three-run home run for Detroit (after which he said, "Revenge is a dish which is best served cold"), while Kosuke Fukudome hit a solo shot for Cleveland.  Doug Fister got the win and improved to 4-1 since the trade (he was 3-12 with Seattle), while Ubaldo Jimenez took the loss.  Jose Valverde got save number 41.

The White Sox ended their four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Twins in game one of a doubleheader.  A double by Alexei Ramirez drove in Juan Pierre with what would prove to be the winning run.  Philip Humber was the winner, and Anthony Swarzak was the loser.

The White Sox won the nightcap as well. Zach Stewart had a perfect game for six innings. Brent Morel hit a two-R.B.I. single. Mr. Stewart was the winner, and Scott Diamond was the loser. By losing both games, the Twins fell into last place in the division.

The Royals beat the Athletics, 11-6.  The Royals took a 3-0 lead on a two-run single by Jeff Francoeur.  The A's eeked out a 4-6 lead in the fifth, but a two-run home run by Billy Butler in the seventh tied the game, and a single by Alex Gordon scored the first of five runs for the Royals in the ninth.  Greg Holland got the win, and Andrew Bailey got the loss.

Tomorrow, Jake Peavy (6-7, 5.21, 1.28 WHIP) will oppose Liam Hendricks, who makes his major-league debut for the Twins.  Southpaw Danny Duffy (3-8, 5.73, 1.62 WHIP) of the Royals will go up against Gio Gonzalez (12-11, 3.21, 1.34 WHIP) in Oakland.

And in Cleaveland, Fausto Carmona (6-13, 4.84, 1.34 WHIP) will take on Rick Porcello (12-8, 5.01, 1.44 WHIP).  The game begins at 7:05 Eastern time.

TIGERS INCREASE LEAD AGAIN

Victor Martinez scored twice and drove in three runs as the Tigers beat the Indians, 10-1. The entire Tigers' offense helped out yesterda/y. Rick Porcello got the win, and Fausto Carmona picked up the loss.

The White Sox beat the Twins, 3-0. Alex Rios homered int he game. Jake Peavy got the win, and Sergio Santos picked up a save. Liam Hendriks was tagged with the loss.

In Oakland, the Royals won, 7-4, to put a bit of distance between themselves and the Twins. Eric Hosmer and Jeff Francoeur hit back-to-back home runs. Danny Duffy was the winner, and Gio Gonzalez was the loser.

Today, lefty John Danks (6-10, 4.01, 1.29 WHIP) will start for the White Sox against Carl Pavano (7-11, 4.60, 1.37 WHIP) of the Twins. In Oakland, lefty Bruce Chen (10-6, 4.11, 1.36 WHIP) will lead the Royals while former Tigers' property Guillermo Moscoso (7-8, 3.63, 1.21 WHIP) will oppose him.

And in Cleveland, if the weather permits, Justin Verlander (21-5, 2.34, 0.91 WHIP) and Justin Masterson (11-8, 2.92, 1.21 WHIP) will battle each other. Both are good pitchers, so this may be a duel. Mr. Masterson, from Jamaica, has done badly against the Tigers in the past, so he might be due for a good game today.

TIGERS KEEP ROLLING

The Detroit Tigers swept the Cleveland Indians to win their sixth game in a row. They have swept three-game series from the two teams closest to them in the standings. Shelley Duncan hit a pair of two-run home runs for the Indians (and scored another run), but the deciding shot was a grand-slam home run by Victor Martinez. Justin Verlander got the win, and Jose Valverde got the save. Justin Masterson took the hard-luck loss, and Tony Sipp was charged with a blown save.

The Twins beat the White Sox, 5-4. What would prove to be the winning run scored in the sixth when Luke Hughes stole second and scored on a throwing error by Paul Konerko. Carl Pavano was the winner, John Danks was the loser, and Joe Nathan got the save.

The Athletics beat the Royals, 7-0. Scott Sizemore drove in two runs with a fifth-inning double. The A's scored three more runs in the sixth. Guillermo Moscoso allowed tow hits over eight innings to get the win. Bruce Chen was tagged with the loss.

Tomorrow, the Tigers, Royals, and Twins will have the day off. The White Sox will host the Indians. David Huff (2-3, 2.81, 1.19 WHIP) will start for the Tribe, while Gavin Floyd (12-10, 4.45, 1.18 WHIP) takes the mound for the Pale Hose.

For the weekend, the Tigers will play the Twins in Detroit. Friday's game will feature Brad Penny vs. Kevin Slowey. Saturday's 4:10 game (apparently a Fox regional telecast) will feature Anthony Swarzak against Max Scherzer. And Sunday, in the final game of that homestand, Scott Diamond will go up against Doug Fister. The White Sox and Indians will continue their weekend series, and the Royals will play the Mariners.

I really can't remember in 2006 whether there was some doubt about the Tigers making the playoffs when they began their September swoon. If memory serves, the suspense was in whether they'd be the wild card or division winner, not whether they would make it. But perhaps there was some doubt as they played poorly in September.

That season aside, and given that the Tigers didn't win the 1987 AL East title until literally the last day of the season, we've got to go back to 1984 for the last time a Tiger fan could be this relaxed about post-season chances in mid-September.

That's what I remember too. Despite losing our last five games of the
regular season, we still finished five games on the next best team in the
AL. (That team was the White Sox, surprisingly, not a team from the AL
East.)

Now that I check the 2006 schedule though, I see that after August 7th, we
were up 9.5 games on the Twins and 9 games on the White Sox. Just in case
anyone feels pity for the Twins going into today's game...

I don't know. I can't remember a single season between 1992 and 2005
when I had any doubts about the Tigers' post-season chances in mid-
September.

TIGERS WIN, KEEP LEAD ON WHITE SOX

The Tigers beat the Twins, 3-2, thanks to a solo home run by Brandon Inge with two outs in the ninth inning.  The Tigers' other thirdbaseman, Wilson Betemit, hit a sol home run earlier in the game.  Joe Mauer hit a solo home run in the losing effort.  Glen Perkis was the loser, and Al Alburquerque was the winner.

The White Sox beat the Indians, 7-3.  Shelley Duncan homered in the seventh to tie the game, but in the bottom of the tenth, Alex Rios hit a grand-slam home run.

The Royals beat the Mariners, 4-2. Eric Hosmer and Jeff Francoeur homered in the winning cause, while Justin Smoak hit one for the losing side. Felipe Paulino was the winner, and Joakim Soria picked up a save. Michael Pineda was tagged with the loss.

Later today (or tomorrow, for those in the west), Ubaldo Jiminez (8-11, 4.66, 1.39 WHIP) will once move take the mound for the Indians, against Zach Stewart (2-3, 4.56, 1.39 WHIP) in Chicago.  In Seattle, lefty Everett Teaford (0-0, 3.21, 1.11 WHIP) will get his first start for the Royals (after 23 relief appearances, including one save) against lefty Anthony Vazquez (1-1, 9.00, 1.87 WHIP) and the Mariners.

And in Detroit, lefty Scott Diamond (1-3, 4.56, 1.52 WHIP) will go against Doug Fister (7-13, 3.17, 1.14 WHIP).  The Tigers will almost certainly lose some time this season, and it may well happen in a game where the Tigers seem to have an advantage in starting pitching.  Tomorrow's game begins at 1:05.

TIGERS WIN AGAIN. MAGIC NUMBER NOW 8.

The Tigers beat the Twins, 2-1. The Tigers did all their scoring in the first inning. They did not have an extra-base hit in the game, for the third time this season. Doug Fister pitched seven innings and struck out five for the win. Scott Diamond looked rather good in the loss.

The Indians beat the White Sox, 7-3. Lou Marson and Carlos Santana each hit a two-run double. Luis Valbuena hit a solo home run. Ubaldo Jimenez was the winner, and Zach Stewart was the loser.

The Royals beat the Mariners, 2-1. Alex Gordon drove in both Kansas City runs; he hit a double each time. Everett Teaford got the win, Joakim Soria picked up a save, and Anthony Vazquez was tagged with the loss.

Tomorrow, there will only be one game in the A.L. Central. John Danks (6-11, 4.09, 1.30 WHIP) will start for the White Sox as they host the Tigers. Detroit will give the ball to Rick Porcello (13-8, 4.87, 1.40 WHIP). The game will begin at 8:10. TIGERS KEEP WINNING

The Tigers won again on Monday night, beating the White Sox, 14-4. Jhonny Peralta and Ryan Raburn hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning. A two-run double by Ramon Santiago was the key to a six-run sixth inning. Mr. Raburn had four R.B.I.s. Rick Porcello was the winner, and John Danks took the loss. The Tigers' magic number to eliminate the White Sox is 5, and to eliminate the Indians is 6.

The rest of the division had Monday off. Today, the Indians begin a series in Texas. Justin Masterson (11-9, 3.01, 1.23 WHIP) will start for Cleveland, against lefty Matt Harrison (11-9. 3.50, 1.30 WHIP). The Twins will start a series in Kansas CIty. Carl Pavano (8-11, 4.52, 1.39 WHIP) will go against lefty Bruce Chen (10-7, 4.30, 1.39 WHIP).

And in Chicago, Gavin Floyd (12-10, 4.35, 1.18 WHIP) locks horns with Justin Verlander (22-5, 2.44, 0.91 WHIP). The Tigers have won ten straight games for the first time since 1968, a year which looms large in Tigers legend. Mr. Floyd nearly beat the Tigers on this streak, but the Tigers managed to come from behind and win after he left the game.

TIGERS WIN ELEVENTH STRAIGHT

The Tigers won their eleventh straight game. They beat the White Sox, 5-0. Victor Martinez hit a three-run home run and Miguel Cabrera hit an R.B.I. double. Justin Verlander was the winner, and Gavin Floyd was the loser.

The Rangers beat the Indians, 10-4. David Murphy of the Rangers and Carlos Santana of the Indians each hit two solo home runs. Adrian Beltre also hit a solo home run, and Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer. Matt Harrison was the winner, and Justin Masterson was the loser.

Let me issue a pair of corrections to the Game Report. The magic number to eliminate the Indians is now 4, not 5. Also, the Indians did not pass the White Sox to take over second place. We at Game Reports regret these errors.

In the battle for last place, the Royals beat the Twins, 4-0. Mike Moustakas and Alex Gordon homered. Bruce Chen was the winner, and Carl Pavano was the loser.

Later today, David Huff (2-4, 3.05, 1.17 WHIP) will try to guide the Indians past the Rangers. Derek Holland (13-5, 4.12, 1.39 WHIP) will start for Texas. The Royals will call on Luke Hochevar (10-11, 4.73, 1.29 WHIP), while the Twins counter with Liam Hendricks (0-1, 3.86, 1.00 WHIP).

And in Chicago, Dylan Axelrod (0-0, 0.00, 1.50 WHIP) will make his second major-league appearance and first major-league start against Brad Penny (10-10, 5.19, 1.53 WHIP). The game starts at 2:10 Eastern time.
