This afternoon's lineup vs. righty Grayson Rodriguez (10.61 ERA in 2 starts).  Rodriguez is a former Orioles' top prospect who's had injury issues.  He missed all of last season with a shoulder issue and had elbow surgery.

  2. Kevin McGonigle (L) SS
  3. Dillon Dingler (R) DH
  4. Riley Greene (L) LF
  5. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  6. Zach McKinstry (L) 2B
  7. Matt Vierling (R) CF
  8. Wenceel Pérez (S) RF
  9. Jake Rogers (R) C

Keith has been hot from the leadoff spot lately, although as usual Hinch keeps taking him out against lefty relievers.
Keith has gone 162 plate appearances to start the season without a homer and he also only has 8 walks.  I never would have predicted Keith would turn into a singles specialist.  Colt is a big, strong guy so it's odd he hasn't developed power.  He showed plenty of power in the minor leagues and had decent walk rates.  

Flaherty on the mound for the Tigers.  He better go at least 6 innings because our best long relievers, Anderson (3 innings yesterday) and Hurter (on the IL), aren't available to bail him out.

It’s early but so far, so good for Flaherty. He just struck out the side in the 2nd inning and looked very sharp doing it. 4 K’s already.

Typical Flaherty.  He can rack up the Ks but then completely lose it.  We'll see how he does the 2nd time through the Angels' order.

Perez just had a blind squirrel moment and hit a solo shot in the 2nd.  Tigers lead 1-0 after 2.

Bizarro world so far.  Flaherty with 4 shutout innings and Perez with a homer and a nice catch in RF.  Tigers lead 1-0 in the bottom of the 4th.

Well, Flaherty is predictively kind of self-destructing in the 5th, allowing 4 hits in the inning and so far two runs. Still only one out. 

2-1 Angels and they are still batting.

Back to reality...

Seriously, Flaherty should go to the bullpen as a middle reliever.  He can be ok in shorter stints, but going 4+ innings is always going to be an adventure with him.

Of course, our offense hasn't done much against Rodriguez.  Tork looks like he's back to being Tork.

Poor Ricky Vanasco, hung out to dry by Hinch when he's clearly in over his head.  Tigers lose 7-1.  They managed 2 hits (a homer and a double by Perez of all people) all game.

Tigers had some opportunities for more runs, but as usual left runners in scoring position, including leaving the bases loaded yet again.
Tigers are the 2nd worst team in the majors in hitting with the bases loaded (Rangers are last).

Flaherty had one bad inning as usual.

We're digging such a big hole for ourselves I don't know if getting Skubal, Mize, Torres, Carp and Baez back can save us.

Maybe we should just tank and trade off some assets.

This afternoon's lineup (if anyone gives a crap anymore) vs. lefty Anthony Kay (3.96 ERA in 11 appearances, 9 starts):

  1. Kevin McGonigle (L) 3B
  2. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  3. Matt Vierling (R) CF
  1. Jahmai Jones (R) DH
  2. Wenceel Pérez (S) RF
  3. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B
  4. Zack Short (R) SS

The 119-loss 2003 Tigers had a better lineup.  
So this is the rotten fruit of Avila/Harris's "rebuild" and all that supposed investment they put into player development and the farm system. 

Valdez gets the start for the Tigers.  Somehow I don't think when he signed with the Tigers that he thought Zack Short and Hao-Yu Lee would be the double-play combo behind him.
Valdez has getting heat from fans, but he's actually been mostly decent this year.  He had 2 blow-up starts, including the infamous game where he lost his mind and threw at Trevor Story after Hinch left him in way too long.  With any kind of run and fielding support Valdez would be having a perfectly solid season as a #2/#3-type starter (he's not a #1 starter anymore).  Valdez is his own worst enemy sometimes and he's making a lot of money so it's hard to feel bad for him, but in a way I do feel bad for him in that he chose to sign with this dumpster fire of a team when he probably thought he'd be teaming up with Skubal to carry the Tigers into the playoffs and a possible WS appearance.  Sigh.

I was thinking briefly today about how Verlander must feel. Obviously, he has only pitched one game this year it hasn’t been any kind of factor, but when he left Detroit, they were a mess - in last place and just starting the rebuild at the end of August 2017.  

Now he’s back almost a decade later after two Tigers playoff appearances and what appeared to be a successful rebuild, thinking he could be a contributor to the team taking the next step and finish his career on a high note. And instead, it’s pretty much the exact same kind of mess he left behind.  Must be kind of depressing to be around.

Another close game gets out of hand in the late innings.  Sox win 7-1.  Valdez kept us in the game into the 7th but got almost no run support as usual.
Brieske looked like he wasn't ready to face major league hitters.

Greene is back to striking out almost 50% of the time and not walking, and he's not even hitting homers like last year.
McGonigle is scuffling.  Our offense is totally screwed if those guys aren't hitting.

Might be time to scuttle this ship and start over.
I'm starting to join the "fire Harris" bandwagon.
Not sure about firing Hinch.  He hasn't been given much to work with.  His knee-jerk platooning is annoying and mis-use of Keith is borderline negligence, but Harris is more the culprit than Hinch.

I am reminded of that great line one sports writer said about Sparky Anderson in the dreadful 1989 season:
“He has the look of someone who is forced to play Rick Schu”.  

We can substitute Hinch for Sparky and Zach Short for Schu.  As much as many of us have been critical of Hinch, he definitely doesn’t have the reinforcements for the injured players who can remotely be productive.  His little in game moves don’t matter as much when the team is this bad.

As much as the injuries obviously play a key part in the team’s performance, we simply can’t ignore the fact that Tork & Keith look like busts and management overrated the potential contributions of Vierling, McKinstry, Perez etc. 

Evidence is mounting that the September collapse last year wasn’t just a fluke, but a sign that the talent is just not there in the way it needs to be, to truly contend.

And Harris is the one who decided not to spend money on offense and to use that money to bolster the bullpen. He also let a couple of reliable relievers go. (To be fair I don’t know how they are doing now). All I know is This bullpen sucks.

Welcome to the party, pal.

My primary concern has been that we were (past tense) a .500 team that
has been propped up by the best pitcher in the league. Without him, and
plus a few other key injuries, we're pretty bad now.

My secondary concern is that our 2027 roster will be even worse: no
Skubal, no Torres (who's been a solid stopgap when healthy). Grade B
(like Valdez) and grade C (like Flaherty) free agents won't cut it.

Mize will also probably be gone. It’s weird there has been no talk of re-signing him. He has been excellent when healthy the past two years. So the rotation could be a total disaster plus I don’t see the offense improving without significant free agent signings.

I wonder how much the calculation has changed for some of these guys who will be free agents. At the start of the season, I’m sure Mize’s representatives probably liked the idea of him resigning with the Tigers.  But now?

Assuming Skubal comes back healthy, now it’s not the question of will the Tigers pony up the necessary money, it’s… would he even want to resign with the Tigers?

Harris has the built in excuse that there were just too many injuries which I’m guessing will carry the day with Ilitch. Would be surprised if either he or Hinch was let go.

    Keider Montero (4.09 ERA in 10 starts) on the mound for the Tigers.  He usually keeps us in the game for 6 innings or so.

    I guess Hinch hopes Keith, McG and Tork might get a couple of walks and/or singles for Carp and Greene to drive them home, and, maybe even a 3-run homer.  Ok, that's wishful thinking.

    Just checked the box score and I see I was bang on with my prediction: Carpenter gets 2 at bats and then Hinch has Jones pinch hit for him in the 6th. 

    OK, in my post last night I think I said 5th inning but I meant 6th :-)

    1-0 Tigers. The chances of that lead holding up are close to zero!

    No RV from Roger, unfortunately. Sox get two in the 7th off suddenly ineffective Drew Anderson. 

    Did Montero get hurt? He cruised through six innings with pitch count a non factor, but to my knowledge didn’t come out for the 7th.

    I think if the Tigers had a rotation of Skubal, Skenes, Yamamoto, Misiorowski and Schlittler they still wouldn't make the playoffs.
    The offense, defense and bullpen are that bad.

      Tigers facing yet another good starter who has a good fastball.  Miller had an oblique injury in spring training and missed the first part of the season and just got activated recently. 

      Keider Montero (3.69 ERA in 11 starts) gets the start for the Tigers.
      I keep expecting Montero to melt down, but he hasn't.   Opponents are only hitting .206 against him.  He doesn't miss a lot of bats but usually avoids walks and finds a way to induce weaker contact to get out of jams and keeps his pitch count fairly low.

      Let's win this series today.  The Tigers need to keep winning series to try digging out of the big hole they dug in May.

      Tigers trail 4-0 in the top of the 7th.  Looks like our luck against good pitchers is running out today.

      Miller throwing a 1-hitter (a triple by Keith) through 6, with 9 Ks and 2 walks.  Miller has been blowing his fastball by the Tigers' sluggers at 97-98 mph.  Dingler has hit a couple of scorchers against him but the ball was caught each time.
      Mariners have a good bullpen so it's not looking promising for a comeback.  We'll see.

      Montero managed to go 5 innings.  The outfield defense (as mentioned) didn't help him early, but he kept us in the game, but unfortunately we haven't been able to threaten Miller.

      We play 3 in Cleveland starting tomorrow.  That's not going to be easy, even with Skubal supposedly starting one of the games.  Our bats usually fall asleep in Cleveland.

      Essentially we need to win 2 out of 3 until the end of the season. Winning today accomplishes that. Don't want to be in a position where we have to sweep at CLE or HOU (yes, I realize "have to" in mid-June is questionable  but face it - we need to win a lot even if we're in a bad division).

      Good start, Montero set them down 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st.
      Leading off the bottom of the 1st, McGonigle just missed a homer off the top of the RF bullpen fence (it was close to being caught as well) and doubled, and he eventually scored after flyouts from Torres and Greene advanced him.  Dingler then singled and Carp gave the ball a ride to deep CF but that's the wrong part of Comerica Park and Buxton caught it.   Tigers making good contact against Matthews early in the game.

      Tigers lead 1-0 in the top of the 2nd.

      Montero and Melton are reliable starters at the MLB minimum than Valdez at $22.8 million (which goes to $42.8 million next year...woof!).
      In retrospect, might have wasted money on Valdez.  Maybe they should have spent Valdez's money on better bullpen and hitting help.

      Kreidler did get his pinch-hit appearance today (against Tyler Holton), but he grounded out weakly in the 7th with 2 runners on.
      Montero goes 6.1 IP before being lifted after 96 pitches.  He labored a bit in some of the Twins' at-bats but he avoided giving up any extra-base hits.  Montero thrives on getting weaker flyballs and pop-ups.

      Tigers lead 7-0 in the bottom of the 7th.  Might even be able to get away with DeJesus or Sommers pitching today.

      Greene joins the homer parade with a solo shot in the 7th.  Tigers lead 8-0.
      4 homers from the Tigers today (so far), plus McGonigle just missed a homer and Carpenter almost homered (hit the ball deep to the wrong part of the ballpark to Buxton).  

      It's as if we're seeing the ball like we're in Tropicana Field again.

      Wenceel now with an OPS over .900 for the last 3+ weeks.
       
      In this span he's become sort of a three outcomes hitter. 5 of his 11 hits have been homers, 9Ks, and 6BBs in ~50 PAs

      Wenceel is kind of a chameleon as a hitter.  He can be a contact guy who draws a few walks and doesn't strike out a lot, and then he becomes a free swinger who chases everything, and then he becomes a groundball hitter who can't elevate the ball, and his latest incarnation is as a Three True Outcomes hitter.  I like the latest version of Wenceel.  Long may it last.
