Brett Callahan

24-year-old lefty-hitting centerfielder Brett Callahan was recently promoted from Erie to Toledo.  Callahan is hitting .340/.360/.447 with 1 homer and 5 stolen bases for Toledo in 50 plate appearances.  He hit .268/.374/.504 with 12 homers and 20 stolen bases in 265 plate appearances for Erie before being promoted recently.

Callahan was the Tigers' 13th-round pick in 2023.   His career K rate in the minors is 21% and career walk rate is 9.9%.

If Callahan keeps hitting well with Toledo you could see him get a look with the Tigers later this season in CF if they eventually decide to give up on Outman, or if the Tigers trade Carpenter at the deadline Callahan might get a call-up.  Of course, he's a yet another lefty hitter so Hinch would likely never play him against lefties.

Callahan is unlikely to be worse than Outman has been.  He's reasonably likely be better (not saying much).  I'd give him a try.  But it's probably not fair to him until he gets 100 PA at AAA.  The pitchers are a lot different in the majors than in AA, and he needs a chance to transition.

Honestly, even Outman is likely to be better than Outman has been.

Yeah, if Callahan is still hitting well in Toledo in a few weeks he might get a look in CF, especially if Outman is still only hitting .150.

From what I've been reading, Meadows and Baez likely won't be back this season.
