The Indians beat the Rangers, 6-3, to remain atop the division. Shin-Soo Choo hit a two-run homer in the second, and Jack Hannahan hit a solo shot in the third. In the seventh, Johnny Damon hit a two-run triple. Jeanmar Gomez was the winner, Colby Lewis was the loser, and Carlos Perez picked up the save.
The Twins beat the Mariners, 3-2. The Twins got all thre of their runs in the seventh inning; two scored on fielder's choice plays, and the third scored on an infield single. (A double and two walks had loaded the bases before the runs scored.) Carl Pavano got the win, Matt Capps got the save, and Tom Wilmhelmsen was tagged with the loss.
The Yankees beat the Royals, 6-2. Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter hoemred. CC Sabathia picked up his fourth win of the season, while Bruce Chen took his fourth loss.
Tomorrow, there will be a Battle Of The Dereks in Cleveland as Derek Lowe of the Indians (4-1, 2.27, 1.42 WHIP) goes against Derek Holland of the Rangers (2-2, 5.13, 1.26 WHIP). Oh, and both of them are left-handed Dereks. In Seattle, Jason Marquis (2-0, 6.25, 1.50 WHIP) drew the short straw and will take on Felix Hernandez (2-1, 2.25, 1.04 WHIP). The Royals will bring Filipe Paulino (career numbers: 10-31, 5.28, 1.54 WHIP) off the D.L. and send him to oppose Hiroki Kuroda (2-3, 3.69, 1.29 WHIP) and the Yankees.
And in Detroit, Gavin Floyd (2-3, 3.13, 0.95 WHIP) will go to the mound against Max Scherzer (1-3, 7.77, 2.05 WHIP). Mr. Scherzer has been working with pitching coach Jeff Jones on his mechanics, trying to correct a flaw. Tomorrow, we shall see the test of this. The game starts at 1:05 E.D.T.
