Tonight's lineup at Comerica Park vs. righty Tatsuya Imai (6.15 ERA in 10 starts).  Imai had been pitching ok but he got bombed by the Royals 2 starts ago and didn't make it out of the 1st inning, which ballooned his ERA above 6.

  1. Kevin McGonigle (L) DH
  2. Kerry Carpenter (L) RF
  3. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  4. Riley Greene (L) LF
  5. Colt Keith (L) 3B
  6. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  7. Zach McKinstry (L) SS
  8. James Outman (L) CF
  9. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B

Would be nice to see Keith start hitting again.  He had that brief power outburst a couple of weeks ago, but is back in the doldrums.  He did hurt his wrist again so maybe that's a factor.
Keep hoping Greene starts hitting more homers.  He seems to have a hard time finding a balance between being the high-strikeout, swing-for-the-fences 36-homer hitter of last year and the more patient version of himself this year, which seems to mean less power (9 homers in 335 PA).
Nice to see Lee getting some hits lately.  If he can get his OPS to around .700 he won't be that much of a liability with Torres out.

  10. Troy Melton (2.56 ERA in 5 starts) on the mound for the Tigers.  Melton started getting more swings and misses in his last start, which is a good sign.  His homeruns allowed rate is pretty high (1.71 HR/9) but he doesn't walk many hitters so he limits the damage.
  11. White Sox and Guardians are off today so the Tigers can get to 7 games back with a win.  Keep hope alive!

  12. Peter

Tigers trail 2-0 going into the bottom of the 9th.  Carpenter, Dingler and Greene are due up. Tigers only have 3 singles and 1 walk with 13 Ks.
Wasted another excellent start from Melton.  Sigh.
Our offense is an embarrassment.

Harris should be fired. It was obvious last year that we needed offense. Instead he added relief pitching, which was our strong suit last year. Now we have a weaker bullpen and no consistent bats.

Now he is in charge of making deadline deals? I pity these Tigers. This guy makes Randy smith look like a genius.

Tigers lose 2-1.  Dingler with a 1-out solo shot in the 9th and then a Greene single gave the Tigers some hope, but Keith dashed any hopes by hitting into a game-ending double play.  Utter waste of a good start from Melton.

Jansen allowing that insurance run to the Astros in the 9th also hurt, but the blame for this one is on the pathetic hitters.

Correct, I'd rather Harris gets fired now so we have somebody else making deadline trades.  I don't trust his judgement one bit.

Harris thought guys like Tork, Carpenter and Keith would be big run producers.  That was wishful thinking.

The good news is that Melton looks like legit top-of-the-rotation starter.  Good pick by Al Avila.
Now we've got to hope Melton will never need Tommy John surgery.  I thought when Melton had an elbow issue in spring training he was headed for TJS.

The Tigers started the homestead 14 games under .500 then rattled off 4 wins. But now after this 3rd loss in a row, they are 13 games under.  So they’ve pretty much reversed the slim progress they had made.

You can’t even blame this on injuries anymore. Torres is the only regular on the DL. They’ve got all their starting pitchers back unless you’re really crying out for Flaherty and Verlander :-)

Torres did seem to make an impact on the offense.  It's not like he was a superstar or anything, but just having him in the lineup seemed to force the opponents to throw more pitches and made the lineup a bit deeper.   Torres would usually give us quality at-bats.

However, Lee has been hitting pretty well lately as Torres' replacement, but Lee doesn't draw walks and extend at-bats like Torres.  The Tigers' offense as currently constructed is just not good enough.  It's basically 2 really good hitters (Dingler, McGonigle), a good hitter (Greene), a just above-average hitter (Carpenter against righties), and a bunch of below-average hitters and scrubs.  Keith and Tork are dragging down the offense.

I did leave out Javy Baez.  Who knows what we would’ve gotten from him this season but I’d prefer him to the combo of Perez/Outman/Vierling etc in CF.  And we wouldn’t have had to suffer through a few weeks of Zach Short either.

But yeah, the bigger problems are both Keith & Tork being busts. At least Tork has given us a couple of big home run seasons. Keith has brought nothing to the table in now over 1200 career plate appearances.

McGonigle-Dingler-Greene is a good trio to work around for the future and Carpenter can be a contributor but it’s hard to know where they should go from here with the offense.

You know your offense is in trouble when you miss Javy.

Colt Keith was not terrible in 2025. I just think he is being horribly misused and it could be affecting his confidence.

Keith had a .790 OPS before the All-Star break last year and a .690 OPS after.  But that’s mainly because his September OPS was .652.

This clearly coincided with the wrist injury, which kept him out until the Seattle series in the playoffs. He was terrible then as well, so obviously he hadn’t fully healed.

We’ve heard the wrist is still bothering him this season. If that’s the issue, he is clearly hurting the team at this point trying to play through it for another half season.

Keith also re-injured his wrist on a fielding play recently (after he had that mini hot streak, including the 3-homer game).
He's been slumping since then.

I still think the biggest issue with Keith is Hinch refusing to let him play full-time, and making his playing time sporadic.
That's a big negative against Hinch as far as I'm concerned.  It's malpractice in the development of one of your top hitting prospects.

I'm sure Hinch would scoff at you if you complained to him about how he's treating Keith as a platoon player, but I'd like to know what Keith thinks to himself about it.  Of course, Keith will never say anything publicly, but I wonder how he really feels about it (same with Carpenter).
