I'd trade Skubal to the Yankees for Aaron Judge (Equal value), to Kansas City for Bobby Witt Jr, to Toronto for Vlad Guerraro, or maybe to Seattle for Julio Rodriguez. otherwise I am keeping him and paying him whatever he warts (It's not my money.)

But you are only trading "one season of Tarik Skubal", not the whole Tarik Skubal.

I think he's just saying he likes Skubal so much he'd want an established franchise cornerstone hitter in return (not likely even if Skubal was under contract for a while) but barring that he'd prefer just to break the bank to keep him.

Heck yeah, I trade Skubal for Bobby Witt, Jr. straight up, but obviously that's never going to happen.

Correct, it's not our money.  The Tigers are owned by a multi-billion-dollar enterprise.  They can afford to extend Skubal, but what are the ownership's priorities and how much "profit" do they expect from owning the Tigers?  If they don't care about maximizing profit then extending Skubal totally is within their means.

I would argue that the goodwill and fan interest the ownership would generate by extending Skubal would actually increase their profits, or at least would not make them lose money, but maybe I'm wrong.

Tony Paul of Detroit News fame reports the Tigers are raking in double what their current payroll is according to Forbes, If that is the case, they have money to spend.

"Their payroll was just less than $160 million in 2025, placing them in the middle of the pack in Major League Baseball, though first in the American League Central. It's not likely the Tigers will be a top-five spender under Chris Ilitch like they were under his late father, Mike Ilitch. But given Forbes has estimated the Tigers' revenues to be at more than twice the payroll, there assuredly is room to do more, should Harris and Ilitch get the itch to get aggressive."

A few people have referenced this chart, it's probably useful to post it here.   The Tigers are already in the top half of payroll as a fraction of revenue - by rank.  But, some teams are a lot less gross-margin centric than others, obviously.   Lots of things are not shown here, like how much they pay for minor-league development, scouting and front office (including analytics, etc.) not to mention marketing and normal business functions.

(Note this is 2024 revenue and 2025 payroll, so it's a bit noisy).

The revenue numbers are probably higher in reality.  MLB franchises are notorious for cooking the books to make themselves looking poorer especially during CBA negotiations.

The Tigers were 16th in attendance averaging almost 30k per game and 2.4 million for the year.  The good year helps and that increases cash revenues.

The Dodgers average 49.5k per and drew 4 million people.  I bet that adds to the bottom line to pay for that payroll.

Dodgers probably have a bigger TV deal than the Tigers and most other teams.

8 Billion over 25 years and 12 years into it.  Yeah, that is bigger than the Tigers.
