Given all the resources Harris spent on improving the bullpen and how poorly it has performed, how does he still have a job?

5-4 Royals. We should have swept this series but settle for a split due to shit bullpen and sporadic offense, as usual.

Yeah, I think that’s about a wrap on the season. If you can’t win a series from the lowly Royals, you’re not playoff material. This was the last gasp and now they start the last week before the trade deadline exactly where they were to begin the homestand. Sigh.

Agreed. I don’t like every in-game decision Hinch makes but he just doesn’t have the horses in the pen. I was actually one batter away from thinking Sommers might be a useful piece but shame on me.

Then two on nobody out in the 9th with the heart of the order coming up and the O can’t score. Rough afternoon. Part of
me hopes they lose four or five over the next two series so we can have a definitive path at the trade deadline.

A 2-2 split in this series was, to me, the worst possible outcome.  4-0 or 3-1 and holding onto Skubal and Mize appeared to make sense.  Losing 3 or 4 would have, in my view opened the door to trading one or both.

This leaves possible openings either way.  I personally think cashing in Skubal, Mize, Torres and Jansen would make sense, depending upon what return is available.  But I suspect that the front office will likely try to have it both ways.  I certainly do not want the Tigers to give up any of their top prospects for what I think will be a very long shot at making the postseason.

There is a temptation to expect a run like that that ended the '24 season.  This is possible, I suppose, and having players that experienced this may make it slightly more likely than otherwise might be the case.  But any such psychological life is likely to have very minimal impact on the likelihood of a run to the playoffs, if any.

Stupid lineup with Lee batting 9th.

I’m not trying to excuse Sommers, but any time you need 4 scoreless innings from your pen, you are asking a lot.  The offense is the root cause - without a crucial error by the Royals today, the Tigers probably don’t score at all.

The Tigers' bottom of the 9th in the last 2 games was an embarrassment.  Horrible at-bats with runners in scoring position.

White Sox won today so we're 6.0 back in the Central, but still just 3.0 back in the wild card.  Keep hope alive!

The Orioles come to Detroit for 3 games starting tomorrow.   Tigers are 1 behind the Os in the wild card standings.    Montero, Melton and Skubal will be the starters for the Tigers.  I assume Javy Baez will be back for the Baltimore series.  He played in CF for Toledo today and was 2-4 with 2 singles.  He had 3 hits on Saturday for Toledo.

I hope the Tigers DFA Outman to make room for Baez but they'll probably send Malgeri down instead because Outman hits lefty and they want a lefty  platoon option in CF.

I blame the offense for some of the blown leads by the bullpen this year.  With a better offense, the Tigers wouldn't need to hang onto so many 1-run leads in the later innings.

Harris should just be a scouting/draft coordinator or something like that.  He sucks as a President of Baseball Operations (technically Jeff Greenberg is the Tigers' GM, but Harris ultimately calls the shots).  Giving Harris a checkbook to sign players is terrible mistake.
