Skubal in WBC

Tarik Skubal’s one start in the WBC is today against Great Britain. It’s at 8 p.m. ET. It should be on Fox.

On Ben Verlander’s podcast, Skubal explained he’s only making one start in the WBC because of how it falls in his spring preparation plans. He said if this was during the season, he’d be able to pitch another game and throw more pitches.

I forget if it was the same interview or on one of the other Tigers-related podcasts where it was reported he’ll only throw about 55 pitches. Or maybe it was in one of the stories about him only making one start where the pitch limit was mentioned.

Anyway, I guess we’ll see how it goes. Maybe it’ll be one of the most efficient perfect games ever. If he averages 10 pitches per inning, that’ll get him into the sixth. 😄

I was looking at the British team's lineup.  Yankees' 2B Jazz Chisholm, Jr. is playing for them but most of their lineup are minor leaguers and AAAA types.   Trayce Thompson, who was in the Tigers' system a couple of years ago, is also in the lineup.  He's played in 369 games in the majors.

I was going to predict the British team might not get a hit against Skubal, but their leadoff hitter, CF Nate Eaton, just doubled against Skubal to lead off the game.

The British starter is 31-year-old righty Tyler Viza.  He has a 23.14 ERA in 4 major league starts for the Phillies.

Actually, Eaton homered against Skubal (I was following the game on MLB Gameday and they originally recorded it as a double) to lead off the game.  There was an umpire review and they gave Eaton a homer instead.

Welp, Skubal gave up a first-pitch homer to Nate Eaton, who's on Boston's 40-man roster. It orginally was called a double, but the call was overturned after a challenge by the Brits. He then struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. of the Yankees on three pitches, retired Harry Ford of the Nationals on a popup to third and got BJ Murray of the Cubs system to ground out to short.

I’m kind of anxious to see him get through this start. Always get nervous on things like this that there will be an injury.

Skubal looked in midseason form after the Eaton home run, striking out Chisholm on 3 pitches.

Skubal went 3 innings and was lifted.  He allowed 1 run on 2 hits with 5 Ks and no walks.  GBR leadoff man Nate Eaton, homered and singled against him.

The USA team hasn't scored in 3 innings vs. GBR starter Tyler Viza.
