I mentioned in the other thread that Casey Mize has been solid through 5…but Hinch took him out to start the 6th despite having thrown only 69 pitches.

He brought in Holton to face Juan Soto but it backfired as Holton walked him, and then the Mets got an infield hit.   I would’ve let Mize stay in the game given it’s a 2-run lead and the worst Soto could do was hit a solo home run, leading off the inning.

Baez just made a great catch to keep the game where it is but now we have to have Tommy Kahnle facing the heart of the Mets order with two guys on and only 1 out.

After loading the bases and giving up a run, Kahnle gets the double play. Whew.

3-2 Tigers after 6.

Hinch tried to roll with Kahnle through the 7th but after he walked Lindor, Vest was brought in to face Soto, who grounded out.

I imagine we'll see Vest in the 8th with Finnegan warming up for the 9th, or earlier if Vest gets in trouble.

Finnegan was warming up to pitch the seventh but stopped throwing, squatted down in an apparent attempt to stretch out something, then went to the clubhouse with right groin tightness. That led to Kahnle and Vest pitching more than the Tigers probably anticipated.

Carpenter makes most of the conversation moot with a three-run homer in the 7th for a 6-2 lead, and what would end up being the final score.

David, thanks for the update on Finnegan - I didn't know there was a health issue; hopefully he'll be ready for the weekend. Montero was the choice in the 9th today and was ok.

White Sox come into town on Friday. Paddack is still listed as the starter on ESPN but I'm guessing we'd see a bullpen game featuring SGL and Melton, unless Hinch decides to pitch Flaherty and Skubal on normal rest.

Evan Woodbery from MLive reported it'll be Flaherty, Skubal and Morton against Chicago.

Carpenter hit the 3-run homer against Ryan Helsley.
Helsley has been a huge bust for the Mets after being one of the big-name closers who was traded at the deadline.  Helsley has a 11.45 ERA with the Mets in 14 appearances.

I know a lot of Tigers' fans on social media wanted to trade for Helsley, but Finnegan, who was a lower-profile pickup, has been way better.

The Mets traded their #8 prospect, #14 prospect and a 23-year-old A-ball pitching prospect for Helsley.  The Tigers gave up much less for Finnegan.

Fingers-crossed Finnegan doesn't need to go on the IL.
