This is sad news. Thankfully Ernie lived a rich and full life. And his life enriched millions of others along the way. I grew up listening to Ernie Harwell call baseball games on the radio. I can remember listening to Ernie in the back yard with friends and family or walking down the street in the evening and hearing his voice coming from nearly every house you would pass or falling asleep listening to Ernie on my transistor radio during late games from California. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Harwell once at a book signing. I only spoke with him for a few moments but he had a warmth and a charm about him that made you feel that he was your friend even if you only had spoken for seconds. No one I have ever met or spoken with has ever had a bad thing to say about Ernie Harwell. He is truly one of a kind. With his beloved Detroit Tigers heading for a pennant in what may well be his final season it would be a grea! t thing if the Tigers were to invite him back to the broadcast booth this fall for one farewell performance.

Obviously, Ernie means a lot to all of us.  Gotta love his attitude about it though.  The Free Press has some audio excerpts from Ernie's "audio scrapbook" at the link below.  The 1984 clip is kind of odd in that Ernie spends a couple of minutes talking about that season and then specifically, Kirk Gibson's home run off Gossage to secure the World Series victory but then they use the audio of Vin Scully for the actual home run call - which sucks by the way. Why would you not use Ernie's call???

Amen.

Karlun, I couldn't have said things better myself, although I will snip
most of this post for the sake of brevity.

If the Tigers make the playoffs, he likely will be invited back to the
booth at that point. But he does not do play-by-play, and has not since
he retired. Still, like you, I would love to hear him do even some
colour commentary during the game. He certainly has a good memory
still.

I had tears in my eyes when Ernie and Paul Carey did their last broadcast in 1991.  Of course Ernie was brought back eventually, but it wasn't quite the same.
