This may be a bit controversial, but on reflection I think the Tigers should entertain offers for Skubal in the off season. I'm not saying we let him go for a couple of "B" prospects. It'd have to be Grade A Major League Ready guys.

I'm just not convinced that we have the team to truly contend next season. The post-AS fall off showed up far too many holes. I'm hopeful that McGonigle and Clark will be an improvement, but realistically we're looking at 2027 for them. Moving Skubal now, while he still has a year on his contract, give us the best chance of getting the best return for him.

I'm not talking "re-build" here. I don't think we're that far away, but I do believe that with the current team, what you see is what you get. Talented, but far too inconsistent across the board. A top player (or two) for Skubal, Max and Kevin breaking through, and a timely free agent or two would I think see us in good shape for 2027. As an additional fly in the ointment though, I'm not entirely convinced that Harris is the right guy to pull off those kind of deals.

Oh, and ditch Hinch too.

Trading one of the best pitchers in a generation is just going to set you back even more. And I don’t think anyone is going to trade major league ready players because they would instead put those players in their own lineup if they are a team that is already close.

Perhaps there’s a universe where a super creative GM could make some bold Skubal trade that would immediately set the Tigers up to go further in the playoffs next year.  But that GM certainly isn’t Scott Harris. And I’m not sure there is some magical scenario where they could actually get better in the short term by trading Skubal. Seems far-fetched to me. Starting with the fact you’d be down one super elite starting pitcher :-)

I don’t envy Tigers management because they have to really dig deep and figure out why the September collapse happened. It isn’t quite the standard close playoff loss where we were just one good reliever or one big bat away from winning. I mean it is on paper…but that’s if you ignore the fact they blew such a large lead and played pretty bad baseball for almost an entire month (with another really bad losing streak in the middle as well).

That’s the bigger thing that needs to be addressed.  It’s not just a scenario where a couple of key free agents will take the team over the top. It’s a little deeper than that I think.

If you keep Skubal for one more season then all you get is a comp draft pick in return for him in the 2027 draft.

I don't think you get 3 major-league ready players for Skubal in a trade now because of his contract situation.

The time to trade Skubal when his value was higher was after last season or during last season, but that was unlikely to happen due to the Tigers being "contenders".

You may recall I raised this idea last season.  I think he had much more value then, with two years left on his contract.

The question is always "can you get good value in return"  It's hard to equal the value of a Cy Young type pitcher.  But it's possible.  The best chance is to get a bidding war, which means start early.

And, I hope it goes without saying, you don't just trade him for the best offer. If the best offer isn't good, you keep him.

Yep, Skubal’s value is less now.
I thought they might make a blockbuster deal involving Skubal at the deadline last year.  Remember the Tigers were sellers last year and looked out of contention, but then shocked everyone by getting hot and making the playoffs.

Losing Skubal to free agency for a comp draft pick is going to set you back more.

If the Tigers keep Skubal next year and want to advance to the WS, they better get him some better offensive and bullpen help.
