The Tigers also added what's left of Kenley Jansen and righty reliever Jacob Waguespack to the active roster and optioned Beau Brieske and Brenan Hanifee to Toledo.  Hanifee seems to have a ton of options.  He's always making the trip back and forth from Toledo.

Players who have “options” left can be sent down up to five times during a season before they would have to go through waivers to be assigned to the minors.

I don’t know how Hanifee has options left. This is the fourth season when he has played in the majors. Players get three years when they can be optioned. In his first season when he played in the majors, 2023, did he start the year on the 40-man? If not and he was added during the season and then called up in September, he would not have been optioned to the minors that season and his first option year was 2024.

I think there’s an exception for an injury replacement? That might explain some of Hanifee’s call ups.

There’s the 10-day rule for how long a player has to stay in the minors after being sent down. That doesn’t apply for an injury replacement. I don’t know if being an injury replacement is taken into account for options, but the option is for being sent down — Player Y was optioned to Triple-A — not for being called up.
