Today's lineup vs. veteran righty Luis Castillo (5.53 ERA in 10 starts, 12 appearances).  Castillo has been Seattle's version of Flaherty as a struggling veteran righty.

  1. K Carpenter (L) RF
  2. K McGonigle (L) SS
  3. G Torres (R) DH
  4. R Greene (L) LF
  5. D Dingler (R) C
  6. C Keith (L) 3B
  7. S Torkelson (R) 1B
  8. Z McKinstry (L) 2B
  9. W Pérez (S) CF

Carpenter at leadoff is weird especially since Jones will inevitably replace Carp when the Mariners bring in a lefty reliever.  So you'll have Jones batting in the late innings again.  Sigh.
Torres gets moved to the #3 spot.  He had a rough day yesterday with a Golden Sombrero from the leadoff spot. Gleyber had trouble catching up with 95+ mph fastballs yesterday.
Flaherty starting for the Tigers. Who the heck knows what we'll get?

Tigers keep swinging and missing at high fastballs from Castillo.  Even McGonigle is chasing up in the zone. They were doing the same thing yesterday vs. Miller.

Mariners lead 1-0 in the top of the 3rd.  Flaherty is giving up hard contact.

By the way, the home plate umpire, Laz Diaz, is awful.

Woof, McKinstry just struck out on a fastball that was higher than the pressbox.

McGonigle gets an inside middle fastball and not a high fastball and hits a homer to lead off the bottom of the 4th.  Game tied 1-1.

Hinch loves to use pinch hitters but our pinch hitters consistently fail.  Tigers trail 4-3 in the top
Of the 8th but have missed 2 big scoring chances where pinch hitters failed.

We need a Gates Brown.

And against the tough closer Munoz to boot; I think the hit was off a 99mph fastball. That was not high in the zone . :)

Also looks like it was almost caught by the second baseman - it would have been very on brand for this year’s team if the potential winning hit was taken away by a great defensive play.

I think we’ve been able to give Munoz trouble in the past.  In fact, I remember we’ve done well at times against some of the flamethrowing closers and setup guys in recent years.  We can hit heat lower on the zone.
I know we had some success against Clase, but in his case he might have had money bet against himself at the time.

Great win and another series win against a good team.  Tigers certainly had plenty of scoring chances that they wasted earlier in this game. McGonigle saved our butts. Wenceel also contributed a lot today. He does seem to be hitting better.

We need to keep winning series to make up for May’s disaster to somehow get back in the race.

I remember a walkoff or similar game against him in 2024. I don’t think we had much success against him last year, including playoffs.

McGonigle's walk-off single to RF was on a 99-mph fastball high and inside the zone.  It was a strike but it was up.  McG can flat-out hit.
Several of the Tigers' earlier swings and misses were at fastballs above the zone or at the very top of the zone.

On August 15, 2024, Javy Baez hit a 2-run homer against Munoz in the bottom of the 8th and the Tigers won 2-1.

Last year on April 2, the Tigers loaded the bases against Munoz in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out, but Baez hit into a forceout at the plate and McKinstry struck out.  The Tigers lost 3-2.

I think in 2024 during our magical 2nd-half run, we had a few comebacks against flamethrowing closers.

Tigers' pinch hitters are 11/81 this season (.136), which is 26th overall in MLB.  MLB pinch-hitting average is .205.
The Tigers are tied for 2nd overall in pinch-hit homers this season with 3.

Last year Tigers' pinch-hitters hit .243 (10th overall) and were 2nd overall with 7 pinch-hit homers.

The Tigers lead MLB in pinch-hitting appearances with 90 (not surprising given Hinch's obsession with platooning).
Last year the Tigers led MLB with 209 pinch-hitting appearances, which was 41 more than the 2nd place team.

Hinch's platooning/pinch-hitting has been mostly a failure this year.   It's one reason our platoon-oriented offense has struggled.

Hinch pinch hit Vierling for Carp in the bottom of the 7th with runners at 1st and 2nd and 1 out.  Vierling popped out, and then Dingler struck out to leave them stranded.  Tigers trail 6-3 after 7.

So Tigers' pinch hitters are now 11/82 (.134) this season.  Give it up, AJ.  Just let Carp hit.

Jones just pinch hit for Keith and flied out so you can add that to the total.

Hard to get to worked up about Keith coming out of the game though. Wow he’s terrible. Is hitting .171 in his last 30 games with a total of 2 extra base hits.

I don’t know who would replace him on the Tigers roster but at this point, sending him to Toledo would be justified.

Tigers pinch hitters are 0-3 tonight (Perez also pinch hit and struck out).
Twins lead 6-3 going into the bottom of the 9th.

What's also annoying is that Hinch lets McKinstry bat against lefties.

The Tigers had runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th.  Vierling came to bat against a righty reliever (because he had pinch-hit for Carpenter earlier).  Vierling hit the ball 103-mph and 408 feet to the wrong part of Comerica Park for a deep flyout.  Sigh.  I would still rather have Carpenter batting there.

Greene is coming to the plate with 2 outs as the potential tying run.

Dingler singled home a run in the 9th after Vierling flied out, but Greene struck out swinging on a high middle 96-mph fastball to leave 2 runners on and end the game.  Tigers lose 6-4. Sigh.
Plenty of chances to score more than 3 runs in this one.

Let's win the series tomorrow afternoon.

I put the blame for this completely on Hinch. Keith has had kind of sporadic playing time (could be partly due to injury) and has never really had the chance to work out of a slump. He needs to play every day, let him (and Carpenter) bat against lefties, and see what happens. Tork has been mediocre to bad this year and is still playing every day. The team made a huge investment in Keith and are not letting him develop. It also has to be terrible for his confidence.

They are completely mismanaging Keith's career.

I think he'd be better off going to Toledo playing full-time against both righties and lefties to work on his swing to try re-gaining confidence.
