I am so glad to see that the Tigers are going for it all by starting Chris paddock today. I don’t think he ever really got a fair shot to be a hero for the Tigers. This could do the trick.😘

Resting multiple starters seems reasonable to me.  And we don't Rogers to have to enter a playoff game at some point after a long layoff.

After how Tork, Skubal and Greene were all talking about going out last night to celebrate even more — with Daniella Bruce asking almost everyone whether Tork would drink more beer than Skub, like last year — it's probably just as well that those guys have the day off.

For the record, everyone thought Tork would drink more. Will Vest cited Tork having gone to Arizona State as the reason why he'd drink more. That seems reasonable, given ASU's reputation as a party school.

And of course, Paddack is the only logical choice to start today. Skubal-Mize-Flaherty for the wild card series and Montero pitched yesterday.  And it’s important to rest as many of the bullpen arms as possible.

Maybe Tork should stay off the alcohol.
He might be able to recognize hittable pitches better and actually hit them.

Paddack can’t hold a 3-1 lead.  Sox up 4-3 in the bottom of the 4th.

Can we borrow Verlander?

Tigers trail 4-3 after 8.  They had a rare offensive outburst early in the game, scoring 3 in the top of the 3rd on a Baez 3-run homer, but Paddack gave up 3 runs in  but the bats have disappeared since then and we've left some runners in scoring position as usual.  Having Jake Rogers in the lineup sucks but Dingler wasn't going to start today.  Wish we had Valencia as our backup catcher.

Baez, Sweeney and Ibanez due up in the 9th...yuck.  Baez just struck out on 3 straight pitches against the righty Weissert.  Why not pinch hit Greene there against a righty?   Is Greene hungover?

Sweeney just walked with 1 out, but Ibanez is being left in to bat against the righty.  No Greene.  Hinch doesn't seem to give a f--k.

Rangers lead the Guardians 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th.  If the Tigers lose and Cleveland loses the Guardians win the division due to the tiebreaker.

I just read that Harris has inked Paddock to a new 3 year deal worth $48 million. Harris said, “We think we are getting an unusual talent in Chris. He can fill the gap in games where we are down by 4-6 runs and give our bullpen a rest. He can also be a spot starter in games that really don't have any significance in the standings, like when we win the first two games of a series, or when we have already lost six or seven in a row. I just figured if we get out there early with our willingness to sign him. we can beat the market asking price and make him an offer he can’t refuse.”

Tigers lose 4-3.  Sweeney walked and Ibanez singled in the 9th with out, but Hinch left in Rogers to bat and he predictably struck out, and Meadows flied out to leave them stranded.  2 more runners left on base by the Tigers to end their regular season.  Very appropriate.  This team is allergic to clutch hits.

Ibanez got on base 4 times today playing 1B in place of Tork.  That's better than Tork would have done.
Malloy was 1-4 with a single batting 3rd at DH with 1 strikeout.  That still might be better than what Greene would have done.

Hinch didn't really give a crap about trying hard to win this game.  He let the woeful Jake Rogers bat twice in the late innings in a close game.

Looks like we're going to be playing Cleveland whether they win or not, right?  Cleveland just tied the Rangers at 5-5 in the bottom of the 8th.

Yes, we're playing at Cleveland. Games are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Times and TV channels are yet to be announced.

Rogers swung through a hanging, 85-mph slider. That should've ended up on Lansdowne Street, and Jake's expression after that showed he knew that was a pitch to clobber.

So Hinch leaves Jones on the bench the entire game?

I’d be pretty irritated if I was Chris Ilitch. Hosting the wild card series would mean millions of dollars at the gate and Hinch doesn’t care.

Yes, it’ll be Skubal on the hill on Tuesday in Cleveland. If the Tigers somehow win that series, they will definitely come here to Toronto next as the Jays have clinched the #1 seed.

The lefty Greene, who hits righties way better than lefties, and Jones, who is our best hitter right now, plus Tork, were all left on the bench in the 9th with 2 men on base.  Were they all hungover?  Is having them "rest" today really going to make them better for the playoffs?

I would have pinch hit for Sweeney in the 9th, but at least he drew a walk in a pretty good at-bat.  Leaving Rogers in to bat was a complete white flag by Hinch.  At least Meadows put the ball in play for the final out and didn't strike out.

Hinch is getting roasted on Tigers social media right now, especially given the reports that he’s going to get a contract extension.

As many note, Jose Ramirez and the other key Cleveland starters played today. What was Hinch doing?  Did he really believe Riley Greene getting one PH appearance would ruin his rest time?

No Greene against a righty reliever, no Torres, no Tork, no Jones in run scoring situations later in the game.  That's just a surrender by Hinch.  What's his justification?

If those guys really were hungover from partying last night then Hinch has lost control of the clubhouse.

MLB Network just showed Rocchio's homer — high off the right field foul pole. Damn.

I hope Cleveland's flukey wins have ended with the regular season.

I get it why Hinch didn't use those regulars. It's been a grind, and having them fresh for Tuesday is reasonable. It also avoids any of them getting injured.

That is a good observation about not hosting the wildcard games and missing out on some significant revenue along with the usual benefits of being the home team.

We'll see how it plays out. I'm sure there will be second-guessing if the Tigers don't advance further than last year.

You look at the numbers of the guys in the Cleveland lineup (apart from Ramirez, who has .863 OPS and is still really good) and what Cleveland has been doing is way greater than the sum of the parts.  The Tigers were kind of the same way in the 2nd half last year although the Tigers last year still had better hitting numbers than Cleveland's this year.

Even Kwan only has a .705 OPS (96 OPS+).  He hits like Tony Gwynn or Ichiro against us it seems.

The Tigers "big 5" of Torres, Greene, Tork, Carpenter and Dingler statistically are way better than Cleveland's top 5 (apart from Ramirez, who is better than any of the Tigers' hitters), and the Tigers' platoon/utility guys are mostly better than Cleveland's.  It's really weird how well Cleveland has done with such a crappy lineup (excluding Ramirez).  A big difference is that Cleveland's hitters have done much better in clutch situations than the Tigers' hitters down the stretch.  Some of those scrappy Cleveland hitters put the ball in play and lucky things happen.  The Tigers' big boppers just swing and miss.

Cleveland has had an amazing 2nd-half run and the baseball gods seem to be with them.  The luck has got to run out, right?

We needed some Stephen Kwan type (or a couple of them), who can at least put the ball in play and make something happen in a run-scoring situation.
(I think Kevin McGonigle can potentially be that guy, but we won't be seeing him until next year sometime).  I don't know if there were any Kwan types available at the deadline.

But who? Those who were traded didn't fare well with their new teams or play positions that the Tigers apparently expected to see internal improvement.

The third basemen who were traded, Ryan McMahon, Eugenio Suarez and Ke'Bryan Hayes hit .212/.313/.340 for the Yankees, .193/.259/.437 for the Mariners, .239/.320/.348 for the Reds. Granted, Suarez had 13 homers, but the Tigers and Diamondbacks don't really match up for a trade, unless you start talking about guys like Corbin Carroll and Riley Greene.

Zach McKinstry hit about the same or better than all three of them.

Josh Naylor and Ryan O'Hearn hit well after being traded, but the Tigers weren't looking for a 1B/DH type when they have Tork and Colt Keith.

The Tigers weren't looking for outfielders because they were counting on Parker Meadows being good when he was healthy. In hindsight, maybe they should've tried to get Ramon Laureano or Harrison Bader.

The Tigers weren't going to get Carlos Correa. He only was willing to be traded back to Houston.

Jose Caballero hit well for the Yankees, but given his track record that was not expected.

It was unlikely that the Tigers were going to improve their offense at the deadline through a trade.

Suarez would just have been another frustrating "swing and miss" high strikeout guy in the Tigers' lineup.

On paper, the Tigers didn't need a hitter that much at the deadline, it's just that Greene, Torres, Carp, Tork, Perez, etc. went into collective slumps after the deadline.
If a couple of those guys hadn't slumped so much at the same time I think we would have won the division.

Sadly, we kind of needed a Harold Castro-type a few times in run scoring situation in the past few weeks.

I thought Torres and Perez were our "hit for contact" and "work the count" guys earlier this season, but they both started striking out more in the 2nd half.  Perez seemed to turn more into Javy Baez in the past few weeks.
Torres was really good at getting the clutch hit and making contact in the 1st half.  He was our most reliable hitter when we needed a key hit.  He's striking out more and walking less in the 2nd half after having more walks than strikeouts in the 1st half.  His OPS is only .659 after the AS break.  Torres was having one of his best seasons ever in the 1st half but has tanked in the 2nd half.   So much for making a "contract run".   I'm pretty sure the Tigers won't be bringing him back.

It's like the entire team got addicted to trying to hit homers after the AS break and lost the plot.  The patient at-bats went out the window.  Javy Baez kind of alluded to this in comments the other day (which is kind of funny for Baez to talk about being addicted to hitting homers and chasing too many pitches).

The Tigers were still in fine shape when they won those two blowout games in New York, Sept 9 & 10. They were 84-62.

Then Hinch tossed away a chance for a sweep in New York by inexplicably doing a bullpen game instead of starting Skubal on his normal day. Of course, Skubal ended up taking himself out of his actual start in Miami the next night, which seemed to kind of throw the Tigers for a loop, though they did scratch out a win in the final game of that series.

It was really that 0-6 home stand that was killer. Even there, Vest blew two games, one of which they were one strike away from winning.  Even a 2-4 homestead would’ve won the division, though super narrowly obviously.
