Tonight's lineup in Cleveland against righty Gavin Williams (3.06 ERA overall).  Williams has a 0.00 ERA in 2 starts vs. Detroit this year.  Tigers' hitters are batting .108 against him this year in those 2 starts.  Williams leads the league in total walks at 81 with a 4.5 BB/9 rate.  In his 2 previous starts vs. the Tigers, the Tigers struck out 17 times and walked 5 times in 11 innings.  If the Tigers don't go up there hacking against Williams he can be wild, but the Tigers like to hack away these days so don't expect much.

  1. Parker Meadows (L) CF
  2. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
  3. Kerry Carpenter (L) DH
  4. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  5. Riley Greene (L) LF
  6. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  7. Wenceel Pérez (S) RF
  8. Zach McKinstry (L) 3B
  9. Javier Báez (R) SS

Hinch moved Greene down to 5th.  I wish he'd bat Tork 3rd and Carp 4th.

Skubal on the mound for the Tigers.  Knowing our luck, some bad hitter will hit a grand slam against him.  Watch out for David Fry, Angel Martinez, Austin Hedges or Jhonkensy Noel, who apparently only hits against the Tigers.

Javy was scratched with neck stiffness. Sweeney replaces him and bats ninth; Perez and McKinstry swap places in the batting order.

Good grief, this team just won’t give Skubal any breathing room.  So frustrating. Tigers hanging onto a 1-0 lead in the 5th.  Tigers have struck out 9 times already against Williams in 4 IP.  He’s now struck out 26 Tigers in 15 IP this year.

I’ve just been glancing at the game on Gameday. I noticed they blew a bases loaded opportunity with one out. 2 K’s in a row.

But Greene has just homered so it’s 2-0 in the 6th.

Good RV. Greene with a frozen rope home run to make it 2-0.

McKinstry and Perez struck out swinging with the bases loaded.

Of course, Greene hits a solo shot and not with runners on.  We’ll take it but it’s still frustrating.

Even more frustrating is Cleveland getting two runners on without hitting a ball out of the infield.  Kwan with an infield hit and then Skubal makes an error on a sacrifice. Of course, Jose Ramirez comes through because he always does. RBI single.

2-1 now with no one out. This looks like the fluke inning where Cleveland takes the lead. It just isn’t in the cards for the Tigers.

And, sure enough, Cleveland cuts it to 2-1 in the 6th. A Skubal throwing error contributed to the run.  Doing his best Tigers’ 2006 World Series impersonation.
Guardians are still threatening.

Skubal then throws a wild pitch and commits a balk.  Cleveland leads 3-2.

2 years in a row, Skubal becomes human in the 6th inning of a must win game in Cleveland.

Good grief! An error, wild pitch and balk by Skubal in the 6th leads to 3 runs.  Guardians lead 3-2 in the top of the 7th.

I still thoroughly blame the hitters.

Tigers have struck out 14 times in 7 IP.
They are pathetic.

Yeah, of course the hitting is weak, but they are playing a good team, facing a good pitcher in a playoff like atmosphere.

I don’t know…when your race is given a 2-0 lead, he simply has to come through. And he didn’t. Skubal completely self-destructed.

Cleveland did not hit a ball out of the infield and took the lead, mainly on screw ups by Skubal.

The universe just does not want the Tigers to win.

The baseball gods are fickle.
The gods were good to us last year, but his year they decided to shine on Cleveland and stick it to us.

The Tigers had a chance to blow the game open and they didn't.  It's the same old story of the 2nd half.

Now Finnegan is bad again.  Tigers trail 5-2 in the 8th.  Finnegan really needed to have a rehab assignment but it was too late in the season.

Well, they kind of shined on Cleveland last year as well given they eliminated us from the playoffs.

What's really frustrating is that statistically the Tigers' lineup is better than Cleveland's from top to bottom, but the Tigers' hitters have gone AWOL at the worst time.  Of course, Cleveland still has Jose Ramirez, who is an all-time great hitter and still is better than anyone on the Tigers.  Ramirez is 33 and showing very little sign of slowing down.  Of course, when the Tigers had an all-time great hitter at the same age (Miggy) he declined rapidly.

Roger is right, the gods always seem to shine on Cleveland over us.

I feel fans of Cleveland sports teams might disagree about the gods shining on them.

I was only talking about the shining as it relates to the Tigers :-)

Your point is duly noted on the overview of Cleveland.
