Assuming McGonigle will be called up sooner rather than later, I certainly don’t see the point of signing Kim.

I did laugh at this from Harris:
"Javy can certainly play short, and (Zach) McKinstry can play short. Both those guys are All-Stars. We do have options."

I mean, normally… to have two all-stars at one position, you’d think the team would be set. But in this case, not so much :-)

Baez had a .680 OPS...quite an All-Star.

Kim can play SS so Baez can play CF (along with Meadows).  Kim is a good defensive SS.
Tigers have indicated they prefer McGonigle at 2B/3B.

Feels like it could be another Sweeney situation where they just carry a backup guy at SS who doesn’t hit much.  Baez plays good D.  Why do the Tigers need another backup beyond McKinstry?

It feels like a total waste of a roster spot to sign this guy…

Plus, what happens to Keith once McGonigle comes up? Vierling is there too and he plays both 3B and CF.  If they’re keeping Meadows, really no need for Javy to be in CF much.

Good question about Keith if McGonigle gets called up.  Both Keith and McGonigle are lefty hitters and both play 2B/3B (plus Keith can play 1B).  That's why I say Keith is a tradeable asset right now.

I think there's room for Kim because he's a righty-hitting utility man who can play a good defensive SS, draw some walks and not strike out excessively, and hit lefties well.  I don't think we should spend a lot to sign Kim, but if we can get him cheap for a 1 or 2-year deal then go for it.

The reason to have Javy in center would be so that Meadows wouldn’t have to participate in baseball-related activities.

It seemed like there was a correlation between Javy playing center and hitting better. When he went back to SS in the second half he tanked. Maybe he should be our full time CF!

Ha!   Be careful what you wish for. You might get Trey Sweeney in that scenario ;-)

But of course, I was not advocating for Meadows as much as I was guessing at what Harris & company will do. He’s already putting Parker in the group of young players who will make the next step to be like Greene & Carpenter!

Basically Baez played too much.  He should be limited to 250-300 PA and play mostly against lefties.  He can come in for defense later in the game.
