So when Mize, Skubal and Verlander come back will the Tigers rotation be Skubal, Mize, Valdez, Flaherty, Verlander, with Montero and Melton going to the bullpen? Or will they use a 6-man rotation with one of Melton/Montero going to the bullpen? Or will Verlander
go to the bullpen? Or Flaherty to the bullpen?
I actually think Flaherty might be more effective in the bullpen where he doesn't have to go 2-3 times through the order. However, will Flaherty's ego accept being "demoted" the bullpen?
I've always thought Montero might make a good reliever because then he can air out his fastball at 96-98 mph in shorter stints. He has shown he can throw the ball in the upper 90s occasionally. He could be this year's version of 2024 Beau Brieske. When
Brieske became a higher-leverage reliever in 2024 he started airing out his fastball at 99-100 mph.
I'm not sure Verlander's big ego will take being sent to the bullpen.
Melton is probably on an innings limit, so moving him into a swingman role might be something they are considering. Melton also might be effective as a higher-leverage reliever, although he is a bit homerun prone. His fastball can be a bit hittable even though
it's in the 96-98 mph range.
