Casey Mize made a rehab start for Lakeland last night and allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 5 innings with 5 Ks and 1 walk.

I read yesterday that this puts Mize in line to start Sunday’s game in Cleveland. And that will likely follow Skubal starting on Saturday.

Let’s go!

So when Mize, Skubal and Verlander come back will the Tigers rotation be Skubal, Mize, Valdez, Flaherty, Verlander, with Montero and Melton going to the bullpen?  Or will they use a 6-man rotation with one of Melton/Montero going to the bullpen?  Or will Verlander go to the bullpen?  Or Flaherty to the bullpen?

I actually think Flaherty might be more effective in the bullpen where he doesn't have to go 2-3 times through the order.  However, will Flaherty's ego accept being "demoted" the bullpen?

I've always thought Montero might make a good reliever because then he can air out his fastball at 96-98  mph in shorter stints.  He has shown he can throw the ball in the upper 90s occasionally.  He could be this year's version of 2024 Beau Brieske.  When Brieske became a higher-leverage reliever in 2024 he started airing out his fastball at 99-100 mph.

I'm not sure Verlander's big ego will take being sent to the bullpen.

Melton is probably on an innings limit, so moving him into a swingman role might be something they are considering.  Melton also might be effective as a higher-leverage reliever, although he is a bit homerun prone.  His fastball can be a bit hittable even though it's in the 96-98 mph range.

There was an article on this yesterday, I think written by Jason Beck.  The gist was that Hinch isn’t exactly sure how they’re going to play things but he’s happy to have this as “a problem”.

I do recall that they were going to keep Melton in the rotation though. I don’t think there’s any way Verlander would be in the pen and there was a mention of Flaherty starting again because he rebounded in his last couple of starts.

Hinch mentioned the possibility of a 6-man staff to keep people well rested. I think they have only one day off in the next 20 or 25 days?

I would personally move Flaherty to the pen in a heartbeat, but I have a feeling it will be Montero instead. I hope he gets to stay on the roster at the very least.

If it were my decision I'd have the rotation be Skubal/Valdez/Mize/Melton/JV.

If there's an innings issue with Melton then swap him for Montero.

Though if JV doesn't prove to be any better than Montero or Flaherty then I wouldn't keep him in the rotation. I know that's easier said than done though.

Maybe they should move Valdez to the pen?  Another so-so start from him tonight (4 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 2 Ks).  Tigers trail 4-3 in the bottom of the 5th and have the potential tying run at 3rd with 1 out.

Tigers had a good chance to tie the game at 4-4 in the 5th but Dingler and Greene struck out swinging with runners at 1st and 3rd to leave them stranded.
Twins are now up 6-3 in the top of the 7th.  Hinch brought in Sommers for Madden and Sommers allowed 2 inherited runners to score with a single and a wild pitch.  Sigh.
